Hi All

Im hoping to borrow your expertise , to help settle an argument between myself and a friend

Is it illegal to hit and animal ( bird , dogs etc) ?

It is not illegal, however it is a legal requirement under the Road Traffic Act that you must give your own and/or the vehicle owner’s name and addressalong with the registration number of the vehicle, to anyone having reasonable grounds for requiring them in the event of an accident involving certain types of animal. If this is not possible you must report the incident to the Police as soon as possible or at the most within 24 hours. Accidents involving dogs, cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and horses must be reported. Those involving cats or birds, including poultry, are not required to be reported as they are classed as free roaming animals.

Can I be nosey and ask the reason behind the question?

Sure just a arguement between me and a friend wether or not it was legal , thought this would confirm my point

Over the years I must have hit dozens of things on the road: pigeons,hares, rabbits, foxes, pheasants, water voles, toads, and frogs (the green slimy ones, not French people - although I was tempted once or twice…) :sunglasses:

Yea Its definitely illegal. I know this cos when I hit my bird I ended up in court

A short addition to Coffeeholics post.

You have to report an accident involving any domesticated animal, but not wild animals. Cats are considered as wild animals for some reason. Probably because they are so indepandant and free roaming.

You would be safe enough putting David in hospital Mrs5l. He clearly isn’t domesticated yet :laughing: :laughing: .
(Try using a bigger stick? A baseball bat might be big enough :open_mouth: :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: :laughing: )
