i’m thinking of being a lorry driver
1)is fun to be a lorry driver for a company or wiether i should be a lorry driver for my own company that drives a lorry (not for diffrent companies)
2)what do you think eanrs more money
3)do you work more than 5-6 days a week
4)is it more easier to do night or days
5)it is better to do long trips and sleep in the truck or day trips
each day is different, Some customers staff have a good sense of humour and realise that without you being there they wouldn’t have a job to do. and we have a good laugh, even when things go wrong.
Then there are the majority of RDC’s, where the staff can be complete jobsworth ■■■■.
i earn the same money if i work 15 hours or 2 hours.
i live in the truck 5 nights a week. when i finish i can go to sleep if i want, if i had to drive home, then i would get less sleep.
my work can be very varied, which makes it more interesting. we do the usual palletised loads, but we do abnormal stuff, and i get to play with big machines, and try to look like i know how to drive them.
There is a couple of posts that come to mind - have a click on these for a good read …
dont do it
if you want a life well stay away from trucks
this life is not what it seems. i still drive them as i dont know anything else to do at my age
but wish i never started, crap bosses, crap pay, no home life the list goes on…but if you want to see what its like you will do it
I’m an employee on PAYE and I’m generally away five days a week on a mix of UK and European work. I enjoy the freedom of it, and although it’s a bit rough in the Winter, a trip over the Alps in Summer is awesome.
I couldn’t imagine myself shuffling bits of paper around in some office somewhere…
watch this guys videos, sort of gives you a small in sight into trucking.

Just because you’ve had a bad time of it doesn’t mean we all have. I have a fantastic life. I live in the truck 24/7. I have a great boss. A great truck and I get all over. I’m currently spending the day wandering around Iraklion, Crete as I can’t get tipped till tomorow.
I get a bit sick of people saying stay away from this job if you want a life. It is my life. One I love. What’s the alternative, work normal hours, come home and sit watching same crap on TV night after night, maybe get ■■■■■■ out your head at the weekend to numb the pain of such a boring life?
Life is what you make it and so, suprisingly, is this job.
There, rant over!

Good post switch. I do day work so get home every night, most of the places I go are OK but they are just a small part of the day and while I might have a bad day I don’t have a bad life. I also get my choice of life though I expect some adjustments are going to be made in the next couple of years, in much the same way they would when my daughter ups and moves out, I retire, win the lottery (OK the last one is a pipe dream).
To the OP - only you can say what career will suit you but if you want to drive trucks go for it and find out by doing. If it turns out not to be for you then chalk it up to experience and find an alternative. Good luck.
To the OP - if you are a teenager, as your signature suggests, then I’ll say this: Make sure you get some good qualifications before you decide to become a lorry driver… Then, (if and) when you find out the job’s crap, at least you won’t be forced to continue doing it - or some other dead-end job - because you can do little else…
Best of luck.
Before I started driving lorrys I did a number of jobs, working in an office, behind a bar and other things, Im not quite sure what made me want to be a HGV driver, I think I did a couple of days on an agency drving 7.5 tonne vans and I got the bug!! I passed my class two and after several attempts managed to pass my class one. I can honestly say that I have never had a better job. There are some bad days where everything will go wrong but to make up for it are the good days when you get sent to Scotland or down to Cornwall for example!!
I did local work for a while doing deliverys into York which I didnt enjoy but at the end of the day it got me experience and then when I passed my class one I am doing long distance.
You will always get people that moan about there job, every company has one!!
Hope this helps!

Completely agree, and what a fantastic day you must be having- any chance of a photo or two?
THE VEHICLE CURER:

and this one

but remember it’s not all like that - sometimes we have crap days too
No better job.
Make sure you get get some qualifications behind you.If you’ve left school/college see if you can get some work with a transport company and learn that way.Working in the office learning about tacho’s ,drivers hours etc will give you an idea how transport works. If your lucky and there are smaller trucks in the yard there may be an opening for you that way to start driving, its a lot easier to learn the ropes on smaller trucks.Being in the right place at the right time can be big bonus,if your already driving for somebody they may even pay for your HGV when your old enough.Dont forget there may still be the Young Drivers Scheme available ,if it is you can get your HGV earlier than 21 years of age, provided you are working for company willing to take you on.Both of my sons (10 and 15 years old)want to drive trucks but as ive told them do well at school/college /university and you can still drive trucks part time even if you find a better well paid job in another industry.I still like driving trucks and still get the buzz after 27 years so go for it.
If you enjoy being treated like [zb], being in endless traffic dealing with insane car drivers day after day then its the life for you…Best of luck, you will need it…
I think is a great job, that why i am trying to get a job,

I’m a company man myself - wages are in the bank every month, good benefits , no stress - you just do whats put in front of you, if it cant be done it cant be done. Ive often thought about investing in my own truck but then i think of the difficulties involved and i like a easy life but i would imagine it would bring great satisfaction to see your family name on the livery of a truck.
-
I would think a owner of a truck would earn more depending on how well he manages his overheads - i would think you could make a great living - working with a blue chip i make a decent living to meet my needs.
-
I work 5 days a week , mon-fri with the option of every other Saturday.
-
Its a personal choice, some people cant stand the hustle and bustle on days, while others cant stand the boredom on nights.
-
I’m just a day tripper so cant really comment on tramping although Ive did the odd night out. But Ive always had a craving to do long distance Europe work- hopefully one day.
I do enjoy it 99% of the time but you have your bad days of course, but give me a steering wheel over a desk any day
The trouble is, the diesel gets in your blood; if you do it once, you can never leave…
I kid you not. My first boss told me that. I wasn’t sure if I believed him at the time, but, despite having had as much as 10 years away from haulage, guess what I’m doing now…
The problem with trucks and truck driving is if you are the right type of person it gets into your blood and it doesn’t matter how bad it gets or how much you try you still end up needing to be in a truck, but if you’re the wrong type of person it’s hell on Earth.
I’d try to several different types of work if I were you, as what suits one person doesn’t suit another, but the in truth it’s more likely you’d won’t get a choice just have to take the job you can find.
i think its a great job only been doing it 16 years so still new to job compared to some spent last 8 years as an owner driver away4 to 5 nights a week wouldn’t change it for anything its not only a job its an hobby to me to and met some great wonderful people out here on the road … go for it degus and don’t look back its great out here
