Is it best to drive in uk or europe

Hi Guys and Girls…

Having just passed class two going straight on too class one. the question i am asking is…when i get my class one will it be better to drive in the uk for a couple of years or try and get straight into the european work. I have this real desire to drive in europe to try and see a bit more of the world. I have driven abroad before in a car ( which i know isn’t the same  ) but every little bit of experience counts right??  . so i just wanted to know what you guys and girls thought

If you can find someone who will give you a start on European work why not go for it, everybody who goes over the water had to make their first trip sometime and it’s not that difficult these days.

Go for it and good luck.

Thanks coffee,

any ideas on companies who might give a newbie a chance at it?

you could try the removal companies, they will usually take on newer drivers, not all continental work though…

Defo Europe m8.Ive done a bit in the past as one offs, but got the bug so took a job with a international company and havnt looked back since.I do alot of fridges to Spain, just remember everyone gets lost on the first trip.

i have just come back from my first europe trip.
not far only dortmund and back in a rigid with another driver taking it out with me sleeping and me driving home, and yes i got lost on the the antwerp ring roads
most annoying part was that the other driver had told me i needed ring 2 and the kennedy tunnel to get to gent, soi commited to ring 2 then look up and see the sighn post for gent on ring 1 :imp: :imp: so up a junction turn around and sorted my self out after that no problem
defo europe for me from now on!!
chris

yeah caveman, that will/would be my biggest fear gettin lost   then cause i get lost, not turning up on time to deliver the goods

employer would’nt be too happy :imp: :imp:

i wouldnt worry about getting lost i found the europeans more clued up about the place they live in than the brits.if you do get lost always try and ask not only will you hopefully find your way it will help you pick up the basics of their langauge i got lost in germany id tipped achim just south of breman and was reloading gelsenkerchan and bocum only 1 inch on the map it took me an hour to find my collection in gelsen a steel factory in the heart of the turkish quarter got there late couldnt load till morning got loaded headed for bocum after 2 hours i called at a car repairers to ask for directions i asked this old guy who turned out to be the owner of the garage he said follow me he jumped in the car i jumped the truck and he took me straight their sorted things for me load paperwork (my germans very limited) and he finnally says i go to london and drive round and round for hours in the end i pay a taxi and follow him 10 mins im am there so i know what its like to be lost in a strange country.and you could always pay a taxi driver to take ya.good luck with your job hunting i might even go back on it myself yet

nice one jonah, good advice mate

Paying a taxi to get you to where you want to be is a good idea but make sure you point out your height to him before you set off because it can be a tad annoying when he disappears under a 3.6 m bridge and leaves you sitting there.

Happened to me many years ago.   He did come back and get me and then it took him ages to work out how to get there avoiding low bridges.

ooops :unamused: forgot to mention that always a good idea

Europe any day ! Cheap ■■■■, cheap booze, long open stretches of road, better climate (depending where you go), more hospitable people, and so on… !

Was meant to go to Gibraltar yesterday, postponed until today and then cancelled altogether. Been depressed all day. If it had been a UK job that was cancelled, I would have been chuffed to bits. Thats the difference between UK and European work !

well brummie i think i may have made my mind up on that statement of yours!!

i just joined the forum tonite,i am from dublin, now living in the uk,i did european work for years up to 3 yrs ago,i agree with all you guys who have gone out to europe and now would"nt work the uk,i would"nt work uk or ireland.european is much easier, better eating houses,no tatooed cig smoking women serving up substandard food in potholed transport cafes, and no paying to park,it is more expensive in europe but worth the money, for the food.and of course.the cheap booze and cigs,i am going to italy in 2 weeks time, first time in 6 yrs, cant wait, and hoping all the old stop off places are still serving up the same standard of food and wine.to all new drivers, get out to europe, you wont want to do national work ever again/

You’ve met the wife then ?!!!

pmsl at brummie

I would recommend European work as well, however it comes down to what suits you. You are the one doing the job, if being away from home for long periods will be a problem, European work won’t suit.

If you get the chance, give it a go. If you don’t try it, you’ll never know.

i can handle being away from the wife    but my kids are still very young   so that may well be a problem

I would love to have a go at european work, but daughter is still young and think I would miss watching her grow up.
