Is being a lorry driver showing lack of ambition?
a wee trip in germany, training on & speccing multi million £ CNC machines
I left the world of CNC to become a driver. Nothing more boring than standing next to a machine for 12 hours opening the door every 30 seconds then closing it again and pressing start.
Though if your machines cost millions I assume they were large Machine Centres with multi-hour cycle times. Even when some of my lathe jobs ran into hour cycle times that was sometimes more boring than 30 second jobs. Especially if you have an ■■■ of a boss who would rather someone stand on the spot for an hour and grow roots than let the operator sit down and read a book. And bosses like that are 10 a penny. That’s why I did night shifts where I was out the way.
I even lost interest in setting and programming. I couldn’t wait to get away from it all but people think I’m mad cos I was on over £30k
I’ll chip in quickly as oddly enough I was talking about this type of thing with some one not long ago.
I bet if I really put some effort into it, tried hard and found the funding I could eventually become a doctor or lawyer. However I would much rather drive a truck, doing the same kind of work as Mr Switchlogic if possible. Sure, being a driver will never get me as much money as being a doctor would however I don’t care.
Would I rather sit in a big comfortable chair, listening to my favourite music all day, traveling all over the world, enjoying the views, meeting new people, hearing or even being a part of some great stories and memories that I’ll be telling into my old age and not making all that much money in the process, but making enough to live on and enough to enjoy a basic life. At the end of each working day/week/session I’ll get out of the truck and get into my ten year old Land Rover with the heater that plays up on occasion.
Alternatively I could spend all my working hours in the same room, looking at the same view of a carpark out of the window, not being allowed to listen to any music, and spending my days putting my fingers up old mens rear ends, telling 15 year old girls the tests confirm she’s pregnant or that she’s go an STD, or telling a 40 year old bloke he’s got terminal cancer and won’t live to see next year. But at the end of the day I do get to walk across the carpark to this years model of the BMW M3 and drive it home to my big fancy house.
Plus, on annother note, who’s going to go through the long expensive process of becomming a doctor or lawyer and then after a month decide “nah, this isn’t for me, I’m gonna get a different job” Your going to be trapped in that job, to some extent. Becomming a trucker in comparison is much cheaper and much quicker and if anyone decides it’s not for them then they can try somthing new with more ease.
I’m not going to knock anyone down based only on their carrer choice, everyone does different jobs for different reasons. Personally, I only want to spend most of my working days with a smile on my face, in a relaxed mood and making enough money to live on.
Sorry going off topic, I’ll be quick though,

I should have said a multi million pound order, 6 machines at about 750k each, they were point to point cnc wood working drill/routers (Bussellato). I cut my cnc teeth though in engineering, from lathes to Fanuc 26r 6 axis robotic welder and that one was a right pain in the ****.
Back on topic,
Dexter M is right, one thing that we have over doctors & lawyers etc is freedom, we’re not trapped by the expectation of family, friends or golf buddies, we might not earn as much but I dare say that the majority of us are pretty happy, we live in the real world not one of where we need a job to support eye watering overdrafts & mortgages just so she can drive our kids the 1 mile to school in a £90,000 Q7. This freedom I think is very enviable, that’s one of the reasons why were treat like dogs**t out on the road by the middle classes, maybe.
I am one of the few who couldn’t care less how people see us. I do my thing, I’m happy, I do my dream job and live a life that I imagined I would as a child. If you said to a 7 year old me 27 (jesus) years ago ‘what would you like your life to be when your 34’ I’d pretty much answer with what I’m doing now. I even have a giant Lego head for company. And why don’t I care? Because unlike god knows what percentage of the population I’m living my life how I want to live it, and always have. I don’t need their approval or respect, I’m happy being me and that’s more than enough. Happiness is all that matters.

I’m doing a law degree yes but doing it because it’s something I’ve always wanted to do, it’s just trucks came first. And yes, I am very interested in human rights. A phrase you seem to sneer at yet we all need our human rights protected.

The red text above is the most rose tinted view of driving I’ve ever heard!!! We drive on appallingly overcrowded roads, sitting in traffic jams, waiting around for hours and hours to be tipped then told they’re going home and it will be 6am tomorrow. Being treated like a turd having to sit in ‘driver rest rooms’ so bad that if someone kept a dog in the same conditions the RSPCA would be up in arms…Toilet/catering/washing/parking facilities that are at best terrible and at worst a health hazard. Overpriced food/MSA’s and day after day of crazy H&S so silly even a five year old would laugh at it.
Oh yes it’s a lovely job…
I think you’ll find doctors have a much more varied working day than someone sat in a truck traipsing up and down the motorway all day 60 hours a week…Tacho in…drive…arrive…pull curtain…wait…pull curtain…drive…arrive…pull curtain…wait…pull curtain…drive…etc etc etc x 5/6 days a week/48 weeks per year… Magic…

Most doctors meet and greet interesting people don’t they?
Good Morning. How are you? Oh I am fine doctor, thanks, but I have an ache, boil, rash or pluke. How much varied could it be?
i certainly would`nt fancy being a doctor

I’m not moaning incidentally. I only work part time on the lorries so doesn’t really bother me.
Clearly you know very little about the medical profession then my friend, there’s just a little bit more to it than that …Sure, any job can be boring…but driving a lorry is up there with watching grass grow, so not much of a plus point really.
what is it with you are you a little miffed at the outcome of your career
perhaps the music thing did
nt quite work out as you intended, but as soon as someone says they
re happy with their work youre straight in there with the put downs. you sound very bitter about something....maybe you should seek counciling. p.s my friend is a doctor and i
m telling you now i could`nt do it.
and another thing, why do you feel the need to keep telling us you only do trucks part time is it because you feel it raises you slightly above us

Are your eyes really that closed to the world around you? I feel sorry for you if so.

Gynacologist/fanny doctor might be all right though.
Must be nice working in a all female enviroment surrounded by fit nurses.

No mate I’m happy with the music thing and not at all bitter - at £25/hour why wouldn’t I be happy? At the mo I’m doing very little driving as I will not be shafted for £7.50 an hour by anyone. Maybe the fact that you keep mentioning the music thing means you have a slight chip somewhere near the neck area!!! My point is that, being a driver is simply just that - a driver. It is not anything other and is certainly not the job as painted earlier in the topic, suggesting some kind of ethereal existence meeting people and living in some sort of dream like world…most people that defend driving do so because it’s the natural thing to do if it’s your job! It often means that you are blind to the negative side of the job though as it means admitting that maybe what you do isn’t all good and isn’t all that difficult…
I drive because, contrary to what you may think, I quite enjoy it. But, if I did it all the time it would bore me senseless. I do not however think I am ‘superior’ to you because I drive part time, it’s each to their own. I drive part time because it is no longer possible to make a decent living out of driving unless you are prepared to work 60-80 hours per week and I don’t want that thanks…
If you look at the OP’s question - there is only one answer. You can’t be ambitious and be happy doing the same repetitive job over and over and over and over…But that doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with it!
Incidentally, the folk that need counselling are the ones that are happy to work for a shiny truck and £7/hour…

coz you`re only doing 3x1 hour lessons per week
lots of driving jobs entail much more than just driving, and further more,to some people, lorry driving IS living the dream…they probably enjoy it just as much as you enjoy music
you actually admit lorry driving is enjoyable here…allthough its "up there with watching the grass grow"so what
s it to be…good or bad…you don`t seem to be able to make your mind up
the lorry drivers ambition was at the start of his career when he decided to do the test,he now lives out his life content with his being…a fact that some more shallow minded people seem to take issue with.
