stereotypes…
dustman = smelly and dirty
army = rambo’s
office types = nerds
factory workers = brain dead wallys
lorry drivers = fat dirty always eating full breakfasts.
Read most of the post and none of the replies but I don’t think we show lack of ambition and I think it’s rather rude for anyone to insult what we do, regardless of the public image we have. For me personally, lorry driving was one of those things when I was a kid like driving a big fire truck or driving a long train or driving a big boat etc, I used to get my Jenga bricks out and road maps with my £60 a piece corgi model trucks and have a ball when I was a kid.
So like I said, lorry driving for me was a childhood dream and like many I started because my father and uncle were lorry drivers and I always used to go with them, it’s in my blood. Of course I could of done something else but I want to drive trucks, and no one or anything will change that.
Do what you want to do and like someone above said, find someone that lives in the real work.
I’ve got the fat bit but not smelly and fry ups.
I do have a thing for chocolate Stella Artois and steak Diane though.
Over the years I have met all sorts who have ended up driving lorrys a qualified accountant ex md of a chain of new car dealerships a retired footballer armed robber.
Maybe not as much now but it suits people who can’t conform to the crap that goes with factory or office work. I enjoy driving and couldn’t see myself doing much else just the attitude of uk delivery points on the whole hacks me off and can see a foray in to Europe or back to tippers on the cards before long.
As for the op don’t worry about it I’ve come to the conclusion all women are ■■■■■■■ mental.
Sure I read somewhere that 3 in 10 couples married last year met through Internet dating and it rose sharply for over 30s
switchlogic:
Another thing is online dating is nothing to be ashamed of. It’s 2011, its the way the world works. In my opinion it’s no different to going to a bar to meet people.
My mates daughter was here yesterday and her dad was talking about dating and how he met her mother, She said, oh dad, people don’t do that anymore, they meet in a pub or club, have a shag and then decide if they want to see each other again.
He said, “is that what happened with you two,” she said “yes, I didn’t want to see him again but my brother brought him back home again one night so I shagged him again” Their first child is 12 weeks old now
I do know several people who have met their partners on the internet. I had a couple of interludes but it didn’t work out, and I ended up living here, quite happy with a ready made family, for what it is worth!
It has a lot more to do with status than money. As Jessicas Dad said - lorry drivers = fat dirty always eating full breakfasts. - we may talk ourselves up as professionals etc, but Joe public or, more importantly in this case, Jill public have that impession.
Her problem is that when she goes to the wine bar after work with her friends and says she’s found a new boyfriend, the first question is - “What does he do?” Not how much does he earn or even what he looks like - though that comes later.
I fell into lorry driving by chance in my early 20s, ten years on I wanted out and took a chance to go into management with a big salary cut. 20 years on, after three redundancies I went reluctantly back to driving. By then the status didn’t matter so I have been happy to carry on in what I believe must be one of the easiest jobs around.
My answer to the OP is that - Yes lorry driving is the very epitome of a dead end job. To get out you will probably have to take a pay cut but you will gain in status, even as a clerk in a traffic office. Also you will have the opportunity to advance up the greasy pole of management. If that’s what you want…
Your LGV licence lasts 10 years after it expires so it is always there as a back stop.

JD, you could go on, and on, and on. People will always have a opinion on everything
My mum tells her friends I am a rent boy instead of admitting I drive a truck.
My partner really encourages me in my ambition to become a truck driver, even thought it has been very hard us both financially. I was working a fairly well paid job with a big firm, moved half way down the country for what turned out to be empty promises and eventually outright lies. I was assaulted by a work colleague and the managers covered it up, put in grievances etc and they just lied, lied and lied their way out of it. I left to set up my own business, but found it too hard going and it was crushing me in some ways, so I figured it would better to run someone elses vehicle. In the back of my mind this is what I wanted to do since I was a child, I remember drawing pictures of trucks (must have been something like DAF 3300 series??) in primary school. My parents didn’t approve and stopped me doing my HGV years ago. I shouldn’t have listened, as I have never been happier at work. Okay, I will happier when its 5-6 days a week and a good hourly rate, but in terms of the job, I have never been happier. And I would rather be happy than be miserable but pleasing other people. If this woman is more interested in what her mother thinks, kick her to the kerb and find someone who care about YOU, not your job. I can relate to the comment about about latin women, my partner is Portuguese, and is always there, always supportive, caring etc etc. I would avoid swedish women as they are the complete opposite, and I hope to the Gods I never have to drive a scania or volvo!
do we assume then that this lady is a £100k a year women herself or just wants u to be??!
couldn’t give a toss. I drive a lorry because I want to. just wait until mother in-law finds out that I race motorcycles. oh no no no
A lot of good coments been put on here but I think it’s sad that we are not recognised as a proffesion I’ve had somebody say to me in the past don’t you wish you had learnt a trade when you left school which really gets me rattled driving is all I ever wanted to do since being a small lad going on trips with my dad it’s been said many of times with out us this country would come to a standstill but at the end off the day I do this job because it makes me happy
As for the women find one that dosent mind what you do and likes you for who you are not how much money you make
I no a guy who started as a driver a few years back worked hard had some luck as well now employes 4 drivers while he sits in his office all day then at weekends goes out with his wife in his new Audi convertible I bet nobody looks down at him because he’s a lorry driver
Yea,i know.Not by dating Service,but,…
Most Woman i’d love are Married. The other Woman,i did some looking in it.

I always thought Volvo and Scania were Swedish girls names? - Mercedes is a girl and a truck after all?!
Still, you’re keeping the faith in your consistency here!
Mercedes is after all!

A swedish women with a greek name caused me masses of trouble some years ago…so I guess I’m a bit jaded.
Indeed Mercedes is a girls name, of latin origin I think. And my Portuguese partner has a German name! Spooky huh?
i love monster trucks, and people pay me to drive around in them, how cool is that

Totally cool I would say.
I wouldnt worry about it mate, if it wasnt your job it wouldve been something else for her to find fault. If your happy with who you are and what you do who gives a toss about what others think
Some women are actually turned on by truck drivers.
Lass i knew a while back, slim blonde and in her early 20’s used to have a thing for truckers
well i am doing a job that i love, if anyone wants to put me down so be it, every day i look forward to a new adventure, now as for the women that have been i my life it seems to me that they need to be of a certain temperment especially to put up with the seperation if your away tramping like a lot of us do.
i’ve tried the younger ones and to be honest most but not all just seem to want the money, and yes done the online dating as well, and thats where i found my current partner, and i think no i know i have found the person i want to spend the rest of my life with, she knew from day one what i did, and excepts that without question. now she is not british and and i think this is possibly why things work as she has a totally different outlook on work/life in general. but i did meet her in the uk so before anyone says she’s only with you to stay, not true she’s an eu citizen so here on her own accord.
my ambition and hers is to keep earning good money so that when we both retire, we can build a nice house on land that she has in her home country and enjoy life
