Lately I’ve been thinking of moving to Southern Ireland. I’m not sure where, and it depends on where I could find a suitable job. I want to stay away from tramping, and prefer to be home most days - though I don’t mind a couple of nights out a week. I also want to run straight. So I am hoping for some advice, recommendations, pointers, etc, so as to help me. I don’t know… perhaps there’s nobody in Ireland that can offer that, in which case I’d have a rethink. Basically, I don’t want to be married to a lorry.

eire stretches from donegal to waterford…bit of a distance in between…theres very little vosa type interest, almost no fixed cameras, occasional cameravan.and 99% chance that if you get stopped by the guards, they wont be terribly interested in trying to crucify you as in the uk…try to be flexible with the jobsworth approach and there will be some local dung jobs available…do not expect big pay.do not expect to run 100% legal with most otherwise you will be of no use to them.eire is a great laid back lace to live with certain exceptions…dublin, cork for being major city toilets, galway and tuam ballinasloe area as they are polluted with diddycoys for obvious reasons, and any of the irish only communities as you will be treated as if you are radioactive.anywhere else is absolutely laid back and exceptionally nice to live.theres some that just despise the english because of historic reasons, but most in the remoter areas just dont give a toss about anything…parking on 3 yellow lines in most towns means that its best to dump at least 1 wheel up over the pavement.pub lock ins abound, and they also do a generous dole if your inclined.its a tad more expensive, but easy if you live in eire and shop in northern ireland.if you want a good wage, then your going t be tramoing legal or otherwise.(otherwise is usually more fun and rewarding)…

Experience is your friend and this man looks as though hes done the rounds…
Driven every country in Europe but never Ireland…

its a doddle…they are aout to announce the switch in 2020 to have the cars driving on the left instead of the right…if alls well after a couple of years then they will make the lorries and buses switch over as well…

the private car standard of driving in noticably more atrocious than the uk or anywhere else ive encountered…it not like europe in general where they carve you up and get in front, its just they dont care whats around them and dont look etc…excellent all things considered though.really laid back and carelass…no panic.if they notice you wanting to pass, its not uncommon for them to just pull in and wave you on…nice and friendly

I lived and worked in Dublin for years, it was the Best time of my life.

the drugs etc have killed it off bigtime over the last 10 years with the imports coming in as well…im happy the tunnels built so you bypass it now…every big city is a bit dodgy, but dublins in a league of its own between the gypjops, the taliban, and the residend scumbags that were always there…though to be fair…if you want to see a japaneese guy play an irish jig on a violin, then dublin city centre is the place to go…

My kids still live there and work there. It’s the same as all big cities bud, in the fact that there are ■■■■ heads everywhere. I made great friends there. I’m only going back to 2005 when I left.

id always plump for being a half hour or an hour away from the bustle…leads to a longer life…youl be a fan of love hate then??

May be wrong but NI firms Montgomery/McBurney/Woodsides have depots in Dublin port and may base FT day/night driver there.
McCulla defo have depot@ Ballymont J10 M50 and defo looking drivers.

All will run straight more or less!!![emoji6]

That’s before tax as far as I’m am aware. That’s the going rate for that kind of work. Between 500 and 600 take home per week is the going rate and that’s maxing hours. There is jobs where you’ll earn more but them jobs are dead mans shoes or you’ll have to work your hole off or fiddle tacos.

Mostly groupage out of McCullas Dublin depot around the Dublin area, doing the crap hannlons etc don’t want in weight/axle restricted areas. Delivering to Nando’s, malanos, etc - they watch you struggle to get pallets up hills, over kerbs, and fight with jumped up security knobs, yet you’re expected to help them strip the pallets down!

Then you’ll have an afternoon of sitting about at keelings, PRL or maybe lucky enough to go to molloy and sherry, where they’ll happily leave you sitting on a bay for 6 hours, then clear off home leaving the red light on and ramp in the back!

Or my personal favourite, head down the docks at 4 for a trailer coming in on the boat at 8, only to find out that said trailer was never put on the boat!

Few not mentioned above

Waltons in Kilkenny do a bit of Euro fridges but looking at their drivers,s some of their reg plates and where some of their drivers park up for the weekends in Dublin they are probably paying peanuts.

Hendrick European in North County Dublin

Caffrey Intl just outside Ashbourne (North of Dublin) do a bit into Europe and have a nice fleet

Pro Trans in Longford

Luceys in Cork have a decent fleet but not sure if they do alot of European work

Thanks all. Some good pointers here. What about supermarket work? Is there much call for that within Southern Ireland? I’m primarily looking for a home-most-nights type of shift.

Musgraves would be the biggest. They run their own fleet of DAF CFs.

DHL have taken over the tesco contract in ireland. They will be putting in their owm trucks from early 2017

Dunnes stores have their haulage done by a few different companies. Mainly Sam Dennigan and & Van Fleet. (Dennigan does a bit euro work at times aswell as they are a fruit and veg importer)

Lidl & aldi are done by smaller general hauliers rather then 1 big company.

Pilse logistics do alot of frozen deliveries to supermarkets

Gist do marks & spencer

Cheers mate

I would try Sam Dennigan@ Ashbourne.
The DC is a bit out of the way down wee country rd but relatively new and PLENTY of room.
Decent fleet of DAFs and think money would be ok.
