It’s the V8 power that’s popular! And usually only comes with a Topline cab!
Because they’re the dogs knackers, the Irish clearly know how to pick a decent motor…!
The irish cottoned on a long time ago that buying a truck that was on top the job is more cost effective in the long term ie: motor less stressed so fewer breakdowns and quicker, read more profitable, journey times.
Go back 20-30 years when Irish exports where at there highest and the top kit for the job was Scanias 140/141. Having proven itself most are just sticking with what they know. I would say that if you look at irish trucks in the uk today the majority are still scania.
Also the majority Irish continental hauliers are smaller outfits with up to 10 trucks and these are the kinds of people who buy higher spec trucks.
Contrast this with most uk hauliers who until the last few years always bought the cheapest, lowest spec they could get away with.
Cheers

The secret’s out now.
Cos they are compensating for having a wee willie,or
They absoloutely positively have to pass every other truck,or
They look really cool in them,or
Scania have never made a truck that we could’nt fiddle and you only get in the knowhow gang if you have a Topline.

i do wonder what sort of responce this thread would get if it was titled, Irish and their hino’s…
the irish tend to be trend setters’ when it come down to the good stuff, v8 scania’s they have only seem to catch on over here with the 143’s and 144/164. the irish have had them since the 140’s and 141’s…
hino’s, a lot of people swear by them 'cos they are symple. only started seeing them in number’s over here in the last 5/10 yrs or so. ireland have had hino’s since the early 80’s■■?
over powered motor’s, they have been at it a while specing 500hp+ for 40 ton’s… and its slowly starting to happen over here… most diecent traming vehicle’s are 450-500hp now, late 90’s your looking at 350hp ish…
a mot tester i know has just been over to ireland to launch the dacia brand over there… renault are cutting some of their model’s out of the range, and launching dacia as a budget brand… if dacia does well in ireland, watch this space over here…
once the irish get hold of somthing good they will not let it go…

what…
I am irish and dacia has been there a while but never took off regardless of price
I still cant see it working i dont even know who the main dealer is now its that long since i seen one over there
with the irish money no prob starting off as long as it lasts and does the job thus why scania and hino were favourites down through the years
by the way i dont drive a scania unfortunatley have to cab hop mostly between iveco and volvo even though i hate them the money at the end of the week more then compensates for all the hassles
although saying that last few days am considering changing jobs less money but at least decent truck as getting a bit wiser and not sure are the antiques worth all the hassles
renault are cutting some of their model range, not sure which one’s, and introducing dacia as a budget brand to run along side renault. they introduced the 2012/13 range to the dealer manager’s and they love them…
Dipswitches…
Hello there. Just joined the site and only my 2nd post. Work in Construction but lifelong trucking fan. I’d never driven a truck before until last Saturday. Friends of mine parked their truck on my site last Friday so they could leave it somewhere secure and have a night out in Moscow. It was transporting a trailer with a Rally Jeep and support workshop as they had just taken part in the Moscow to Sochi Silk Rally. The truck was a 5 year old R500 Topline (From Hungary) with over 1 million KM’s on it. The drive and gearchange (it was manual but got a quick lesson in Range-Change and Splitter!) was as smooth as most cars I’ve driven. So I can see where my fellow compatriots in Ireland are coming from with their love for them…
