I seem to remember all this talk at the time and these pieces of steel started off in Wishaw, Nr Motherwell in Scotland & were transported down the M6 in ingot form on flat trailers with about 4 or 6 pieces chained on at any one time, commonly known as thre’penny bits in their raw state so they must have weighed about 4 to 6 tonnes each.
They would be heated, tempered & turned, etc. In the West Midlands.
In those days there was lots of stuff coming down from Scotland steelwise, now sadly a thing of the past.

Hiya …that gun was a master peice. british workmanship at its best. the barrel was rifeled. each section had to fit
with a minimun tolerance. i’ve seen a section of the gun in the air musium at Duxford. i would have thought
each section was more like 10 tons after machining. you would never work out what each lump was, enless you was told.
i know what iam going to say sounds really bad. i would have loved to see if it would have worked, just for the technical
side of things. i just would’nt like it to be pointed at any area or person.intresting subject.i can’ remember propley but
was’nt the barrel about 30 metres long when assembled.

The company had been granted export permission for pipe sections, each about 18 feet long and 39 inches in diameter. Company officials later said the impounded shipment was the last part of two 26-section orders of the finely bored pipe lengths.
Sheffield Forgemasters’ first reaction to the supergun charges was incredulity. As company official Tony Peck put it: “The allegations are utterly ridiculous. The 26 sections together weigh 402 tons. Try to imagine the support you would need for a 156-meter gun barrel weighing that much.”

There were bits of it laying all over as they were trying to be crafty. I think there were two sections in Patras for quite a while on Hungarocamion trailers. I had a sort of difficulty in Maroc with a zb huge computer system & satellite dish that they reckoned was an aiming device. Never proven but it didn’t leave the dock for several months, if ever. Not my worry I was paid up front

A bit of topic, but, I was making and filling co 2 fire extinguishers in Norwich for export and around this time a big order was cancelled and the factory and warehouse were stuffed full.

There was a documentry on the box recently about the “supergun” and its inventor, he was a really clever guy. Unfortunately he couldn’t see the trouble he was getting into with his invention, or how it would upset other countries in the region. I cant remember his name (I know he was Canadian). He was found murdered outside his flat, alledgedly asassinated by ■■?
Regards Kevmac47 Ps Chaversdad is right the tubes were in Tees Dock for months, maybe years.
