iPhone app

Just found an cool iPhone app called tt guard
It’s an driver hours guard looks really good haven’t got round to using it yet at £4.99 it’s good value as well

Give it a go chap, then you will be better informed if it’s good value or not and let us know if you will.

Have you had the inkling to buy it? Was it any good?

I downloaded this a couple of days ago and have been playing with it, been using it whislt driving my car instead of a truck but it seems to work really well.
It works out driving time, breaks, 45-15/30, 9 hr and 10 hr, weekly rest and fortnightly rest etc, and you can export all the info daily-28 days etc via email to anyone.

Seems good to me for £4.99, I downloaded it to my ipad which automatically sent it to me iphone as well.

Sounds good. Do you have to have 3G and location services switched on for it to work or is it all done offline? ie will it cost me to use it?

I’ve just bought it and can see no reason why it will need 3G or WiFi to be used, unless of course you’re about to email your data to yourself.

No you dont need 3G, its a stand alone ap, the only time you need 3G or wifi is to email the info that you want, if you want to.

I dont plan on using it for that more as a visual remiender as im doing multi drop

Hi Sam.

I think we were both writing that at about the same time

Cheers Gents for the update,

It certainly looks very handy as an aide memoir and if it helps you stay within the regs, then it can’t be a bad thing in my eyes!

I just need to get me an iPhone or android accordingly then, still hanging about with pre 2005 mobile telephone technology.

If anything them smartphones scare me more than the “bogey-VOSA-man”

I use Trucker Timer on my htc android phone, it does use the in built gps to switch between driving and other work (though there is a slight delay, you can easily tap the driving or other work button to change it). I find it works really well, also helps keep track of WTD - notifies how much time left before a break is due, weekly drive time limit, fornightly limit, I think it can also work out your reference period average as well. Useful for breaks too, as you can set an alarm to go off after 15, 30 or 45 mins, and knows the difference between daily and weekly rest. It gets updated when regs change too which is good, plus its only a few quid.

I’ve been playing with it at work even tho I’m only driving a van at the mo
It has an alarm to tell its time for a break
1 thing I would say you need a car charger as it drains the battery

the one for mine kils the battery too, but thats mainly because its got the gps running. I did buy the proper htc window mount for it, as the universal ones were crap and the charger lead kept coming out, whereas the htc mount has the charger lead plug into the base, then just slot the phone in and it charges up and automatically starts up the satnav app :grimacing: . Might go for another iphone when its time to upgrade, had one before and it was great but really like my htc so its a hard choice, depends how much extra they want for an iphone over the equivalent htc.

May come across as a silly question, but does the GPS rely on 3G or 4G connection and as such your having to pay for the data being downloaded all the time?

E.g it’s constantly updating your position using the mobile phone transmitters■■? As such you’ll need “unlimited” data downloads in your contract, is that the correct term to get the best out of it and not lose your house to them in bills

As you can see I hardly use mobile technology for this sort of stuff. I have my truckmate snooper GPS and maps for getting me places and the normal phone for alarms and calling people.

I sound so zbing old now and I’m only early thirties! :open_mouth:

With the satnav apps, the maps are stored on the phone so no need to have 3g/4g or wifi connections unless you have traffic reports etc (those are extra options anyway). The trucker timer app just uses the gps to determine whether you’re moving or not, so it can work out if to switch to driving or other work, again, no data connection is needed. The GPS works in the exact same way as a regular satnav.
Unlimited data plans are useful, especially for watching streaming tv or youtube on breaks for instance, but aside from that you wouldnt need much more than 1gb, I have 500mb on my contract and rarely use it all, though i do have bt broadband at home and that allows me to use other peoples bt wifi connections when im out

hi charliebear

I have just got an archos pad that seems to work the same as the phones etc. I am on BT and am about to sign up to use other bt hubs when out and about. You say you only use about 500 meg of data a month for the phone, does this include using google earth and street veiw to suppliment paper map use etc?

The reason I ask is because I am going to use my pad as a big sat nav in unison with my truck sat nav as I am hoping to be working on deliveries to remote farms etc and the farms are quite easy to get up on google etc with a bit more detail than the sat nav will go down to.

Depends on how much you use google streetview really, I think I used it twice this month as most of the places i delivered to were on the paper maps (farms, industrial estates etc). Plus Ive covered the same area for a few weeks so getting to know my way about.
Guessing your archos pad has a 3g sim card in it? If it doesnt then you’ll only be able to get google maps and streetview when you can get a wifi connection (in which case the data limits don’t apply). If it can take a 3g sim card then you can get google maps whenever you can’t get a wifi connection.
