Interview with Nightfreight - Crewe

Hi everyone,

I’ve got an interview with Nightfreight at their Crewe depot tomorrow afternoon. Does anyone know anything about them. Wages, hours etc?

Thanks for any info.

If you’re working days on the rigids, it can be hard work. If the job is night trunking, you’re on permanent holiday - it’s a doddle. The wages vary around the country I’m told but we’re on about £330 take home for a 40 hour week.
Our hours are 7.30 pm to 4 am.
If you’re on days the wages might be similar but take a photo of your family with you as you might forget what they look like.

I did one nights agency work for them out of Goole and that was more than enough for me!!

I was told I had to take a class 2 to Burnley i think?? to there depot on a trunk and then come back again, the reality was that I loaded my own wagon before I set off, they specialise in awkward items, bulky things, bikes etc, that took me a good two hours, then the drive down to the hub.

Got in there eventually and was told to bang it on a bay driver at this point I was expected to unload it on my own. Being younger and dafter I did what I was told and then I was told I had to wait until the gear came in. 6 hours later I was off back to Goole!

I got in at 7am, absolutley shattered and then it started all again!!

Im not sure what they day works like but the nights are awful.

Hope this helps!!

p.s after reading Meatpastes comment I think they took me for an idiot!!

in a word nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

dont do it, i found the job a NIGHT- MARE, and that was on a good day, but that might of been the contract i was on

youve got allthe tickets ADR hiab
YOURE TAKING THE ZB

I’m being serious!

I’ve got all the tickets although the ADR is about to expire but I haven’t got the experience :frowning: So do I do Nightfreight for the experience or try and find something better? James Irlam have asked me to come and have an interview when I move to Crewe, but drivers on here didn’t seem too impressed with them to.

I think its going to be a case of putting up with the rubbish job and then when I can put some decent experience on a CV I’ll look for something better.

Thanks for the info everybody.

i learnt alot more driving for irlams than i did with night-mare , if i had the chance id pick irlams every time , but which ever you pick it should hopefully get you those 2 yrs experiance , best luck whatever

Crewe to Willenhall (Nightfreight Hub) in an artic and back again is the best sort of experience you can get. You’re not being thrown in at the deep end with 30 drops inside the M25. The trunk Potter did was during a busy period when they open up extra hubs at Burnley, Nottingham and London.
It’s 4.50 in the morning, I’ve been back in the house half an hour, I haven’t lifted anything heavier than a cup of coffee all night and I’ve done 9 hours ‘work’ for which I get paid £10+ an hour. I know what I prefer.
Whatever you choose to do, I hope everything works out OK for you.

I did a few months night trunking for them in a rigid “sweeping up” after the artics when it was busy. From what I could see the job at the Willenhall hub is easy. And from talking to the artic drivers it was no worse for them, Lots of sitting around waiting, but they used to come and call you, so there was no problem getting a couple of hours sleep. The loaders there seem to be representatives of as many opposite cultures as possible - if world war three ever starts it will be at Night-Fright - they seemed to down tools for a mass scrap at least twice a night

If you’re a new driver its probably good experience (lots of reversing on bays) but maybe not a long term career unless (like me) you just want a quiet life :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

That’s strange, that’s exactly what the man from the agency told me when he said he had work for me there!

I was working out of Nottingham in a 7.5 tonner, 50 drops a day round Leicestershire, plus 4 or 5 collections :open_mouth: It wasn’t too bad once I got used to it, depends how it was loaded though, and how many ‘what time will you be there’ phone calls (at least 5 a day)

I did get offered a permanent job with them, but sensibly turned it down. I can’t remember the wages, but they weren’t great.

If you get on there Wilde1, expect to be doing trailer swops in laybys off the A500 at around 7.45 in the morning! I see them there regular. Look to have new tackle though from what I’ve seen, both trailers and units.

I think the interview went ok but not too sure.

I know they aren’t well thought of but I thought it sounded ok. It might be different in reality I suppose but there is no handball and the hours are mon-fri 2pm - 11pm

Wages are ok and I will get at least 1 week of training. There are a lot firms out there that can’t even manage that.

I might not even get offered the job but I think its worth a try if I get offered it.

I used to work at NF crewe doing nights, 3 trips to the hub and back, all trailer swaps. It was good work! I left about 6 months ago.

Wages were 23K a year and I was there for about 18 months. I only left because the boss was a real slave driver and could treat the workers pretty poorly. His attitude was, any problems? Pi$$ off!! He also expected drivers to work though their breaks to load if it meant meeting their schedule. (I didnt have that problem on my run) Andy was a big fan of scedules, more than 5 mins late a written explanation is required!

The pay structure was a bit ■■■■■ too, the 23K includes an “attentance allowance” of £100 a month, If your off sick for a day you lose your wages for the day and the £100 allowance. It resulted in drivers obviously unfit for work on the road because they couldnt afford to lose the money. If you do ring in sick they bend your ear too. [zb]s.

Yes it pays the bills. Id go for it as the work itself is good, the other drivers are a good bunch and some have been there for years so it shows some people love it.

If it needs creative spelling, it’s not allowed. L.
