Interview Attire

Short skirt and a hint of stockingtop should do just fine

I had a interview VERY recently, with a large firm. Maritime Rocked up in Smart Jeans, T-shirt, Help for heroes sweaty and my driving cap. Its not about how you look, its about how bad they need drivers
Worth noting, got the job and also had another job offer in almost exactly same attire with Humber Port Logistics

You quite probably did as both those firms need drivers badly because they pay crap and they’re crap to work for. So yeah you get the job turning up in jeans and a t-shirt at firms which are desperate for drivers because they’re bottom of the barrel but the ones in our area that are decent companies and pay towards £10 an hour instead of £7 an hour aren’t that impressed by people who don’t turn up suited and booted and you’d not get a job at these going to an interview like you did because they’ve a long list of people queuing up to work there. So in short all you’ve proven is you can get a job with a crap company paying nowt turning up for interviews in t-shirt and trainers because quite frankly they’re so desperate they’ll take anyone with a license.

I worked on fuel and got the job in same dress. And they pay about £10 basic rate. Only left because they dont have the work to give out to get decent hours. Its all above the person. Just saying

Suited and booted every time… nothing less for me!, it displays respect for your potentially future employer, imo.

Conor:
I’ve always worn at least trousers, shirt and tie. Never failed to get any job I’ve applied for and at one agency the owner even commented that he was pleased I was dressed properly as he just turned away people who turned up in t-shirts and jeans.

Don’t talk utter crap please. An agency would never turn away a new temp.

As for wearing suits/shirt and tie combo for driving jobs - too funny.

Only a young driver, but went to interview with Suit + Tie (Evening Jacket) with WINKLE Pickers.

Also took a coat with hi vis jacket if walking on site which would be removed upon embarkation of the interview. H+S Lol

Took portfolio of information such as driving license + printed references (on posh paper ) including printed business cards to leave with prospective recruitment management. (Think I ran out of business cards however it helps to have some printed with basic info for future reference or after a night on the pull )

Its not about how you look, its about how bad they need drivers and how you as a person are. Did not bring hi-vis, gloves or anything the like. They didnt ask so I didnt bother. Gave me one at depot. If you have a driving assessment go in something comfortable. Obviously I didnt come scruffy, Just comfortable, had a shower, sorted my hair out, deodorant etc…

What on earth is a drivers cap ,u mean chav

:smiley: My cap I wear for driving duh! Everybody should have one

Jamiemufu:
:D:D My cap I wear for driving duh! Everybody should have one

From what you said you looked like ,no wonder your on peanuts ,monkey :unamused:

Pays the bills, keeps a roof over my families head and I enjoy it. So who gives a ■■■■. You cannot judge how professional somebody does his job from his appearance. Never had any form of infringement or problems with vosa or any problems with my loads. Thats what gets you jobs. Not dressing smart and driving like a ■■■■.

Clean tidy smart casual trousers ,shirt, tie if you think it’s fitting for a particular company, clean safety boots , hi viz , gloves , even if they are in the car at the ready. Look clean, smell clean , manners , & smile, & dont forget your folder, licences,cv , pen ,questions etc.
suppose each employer has there own idea as far as what they want to see walk through the door at an interview. Good luck

Maybe not, but I think there is a lot to be said for first impressions. Not just as an interviewee but as an employee afterwards in front of customers.

What i wear depends on the type of work and interview. if the interview is held in one of the offices at the yard and i’m expected to go on a driving assessment, I wear my best work gear. If, however it’s held in a hotel or other smart venue, shirt and tie.

indeed you’re correct but going to an interview is like selling a car they see you before you can tell them how good you are.

Oh, & don’t forget to have a hair cut if needed, you never get a second chance to make a good first impression

Totally agree. I’ve never heard of somebody not getting a job because they turned up to smart. (Although I am sure somebody will now tell me different)

A suit? A tie? For a driving job?

You get one chance to make a first impression

The last few jobs ive had ive known the people so no interveiw as such but if i was going foran interveiw id wear a shirt and tie

Clean (pref new) pants that you don’t mind getting 5th wheel grease on, shirt that is clean but not a problem if it got wrecked by grease during an assessment (only a few quid from Tesco), clean hi-vis bib or coat if chemical place (arms covered etc), steel toe cap boots.

Basically, it’s got to be smart enough to look smart, but cheap enough that if you go for an assessment and the suzi’s are covered in grease and crap, you don’t mind binning / relegating to work or garage gear afterwards.

What you wear does make a difference;if the jobs a good un you dont stand a chance being a scruff, ive heard of employers walking you to your car to see the state of that aswell,i think whitewhitewhite said he allways looked what car people turned up in ,if you turn up clean and tidy i dont think anybody would expect you to get caked in grease, :unamused:

They’d be ■■■■■■ with me, my car was written off by a black cab 18mths ago, got paid out and bought car back off insurance.

It’s a reliable motor that does everything I ask of it, which includes towing a horsebox, hay, straw and other horse feed goes in the boot.

It takes me to work and takes me home, looks like a piece of crap on wheels but since it spends all week parked in a works car park, and the weekend on a main road near 3 pubs, it’s not going to get replaced anytime soon if I can help it.

If that means I miss out on a job because the owner doesn’t like the look of my car, then fine, I don’t think it’s a reflection on me though tbh.

Oh, and my motorbikes are the same, 1 is an off-roader that I use for work (high up, good maneuverability, good vision etc) and the other is 25yrs old and a work in progress…
But, both go backwards to their ■■■■■■■■■■■■, between garden walls and a metal fence, and occasionally they stop part way down for a rest, so are never going to be mint…

Judging somebody by the car they drive is bordering on snobbery, and I wouldn’t want to work for somebody as shallow as that. The car I use for work is an old banger, it does not necessarily say that any truck I will drive for a potential employer will end up the same. :unamused:

There was a story going around about William Stobart visiting a depot and spotting an old banger belonging to an interviewee parked at the front of the building, he interrupted the poor guy’s interview and told him to move it as it didn’t look good for the co. :unamused: .I would have told him to shove the job up his arse, he comes across (and is :unamused: ) a bit of a helmet anyway.
