Internal job transfer question

I applied for an internal job, which I got.

My current manager isn’t to pleased and said he can’t let me go until he as recruited a replacement even though there are new employees currently training.

After speaking to manager, he was talking like I would still be working for him until the end of the year :imp:

The department I am switching to have said they will wait for me, however waiting until the new year seems excessive to me.

My plan is to give it a couple weeks and if I haven’t been given a date from my current manager is to go to HR with the issue.

Anybody else come across this problem?

Whats the problem you still have a job and still getting paid irrespective which department your in.

What kind of job we talking here? I assume it’s a driving job your moving from? If so a couple of weeks should be enough time to sort it out…
After that I’d be doing as you suggest and found above managers head…

Ultimately HR are responsible for your employment, so I’d get them to sort it out.

It’s always frustrating when you give notice as you always feel like you just want to get on with the new role, just remember always leave on good terms and that for me goes double for an internal transfer.
Good luck in your new role.

Looks like your current manager doesn’t want to let you go as they know this is a bad time of year to try and recruit, unless you’re doing it specifically for Christmas.
If I were you, I’d offer to work whatever notice period is stipulated in your contract of employment (maybe increase it a little bit if it’s only something like a week), and tell them you intend to start in your new role from the day after your notice period would end.
Just because it is an internal transfer it shouldn’t be treated any differently to how it would if you were leaving the company. Your new boss might not like it, but who cares, they won’t be your boss for long!

I’d laugh if your new role was to be your manager’s new manager.

Hank…Hill?
If you’re working internally, aren’t you really Hank…Wangford?

Stay amicable with current boss. As it’s internal, try and get both managers to agree on a specific date when you move, even if you end a few days before Xmas, have a holiday and star new role on 1st Jan. You presumably got a written acknowledgement of getting new role. That should mean a revised / new contract which should include a start date, or at least an indicator. You could have an informal, chat with HR for simple guidance but not wanting to risk the boat at the moment.

Moving back to a driving role.

I know some on here will think that’s crazy. However its more money, Monday to Friday, starting between 4am & 6am and averaging 42 hours a week. All deliveries are just to other company depots, so hassle or waiting around to be unloaded.

My current job is 24/7 and stuck on a flex rota so never know in advance what I am working the following week.

What does your contract of employment say? As long as you don’t breach that then you are good to ho. As someone else said, if its a short time frame then give them a bit longer, always best to part on good terms.

And remember it’s their contract as well, they signed up to it as much as you did.

PS if it is 3 months notice, then tough!

I’ve a good mate who has gone back driving from a office job due to the rates being paid now , he says it’s the worst decision he’s ever made , yes the money is good but all the reasons he packed up driving are still there , he’s going back in the office

Depending what Hank’s old job was and it does sound really crap terms, that sounds like good advice. I’m watching this with interest as trying to jump the other way (driving to office) and could have the same problem with people trying to block it.

Sounds like the manager is just trying to make their own life easier and doesn’t give a crap about you or your welfare. Stuff em, its your life and your work not their cushy life you’re looking after. They won’t bother to even look for anyone else while they know they can keep you.

I’d go to HR and dont worry too much about rocking the boat. I used to try not to, but it turns out of you rock things a little bit people sit up and take notice! Unfortunately sometimes you have to look after number 1.

That ^^^^ you go to work for many reasons; keeping managers happy is NOT one of them. If you can keep people happy then that is a fortunate by product, if you can’t it’s not the end of the world as they’ll get over it. Or they won’t! Again, not your problem.

Finally started in my new role delivering locomotive and train wagon spares.

Certainly beats walking around 10 miles a day on ballast in a freight yard.

Only took 8 months to transfer :open_mouth:

But it was well worth the wait.

Felt like a newbie for the first hour of driving, over a year since I last drove a hgv.

Any body else had to wait a stupid amount of time for a internal job move?

Your namesake, one Hank Wangford has had very differing jobs, away from music he has been involved in internals in his professional role.

A Doctor who has music as a second string may be admired.
A musician who dabbles in gynecology may be frowned upon.

I went down this route at the very start but they sided with my old manager reason “business needs” was the phrase constantly repeated to me from different hr bods.

But exercise Is good for you , it might seem a good idea to spend all day sat on your ■■■ watching films etc , but long term it will be detrimental to your health
Just look at the state of 99% of drivers !!
Good luck to you but I now would not see a job with No physical aspect as a positive , t&c,s , wages yes
