Interesting my journey to class 2 starting from the bottom

Hi there hi all

I am new here new to driving industry wanting to be driving a truck (living the dream) Who would have thought it would have been this hard. Well I am starting from the bottom medical filled in, Entitlement back so practice my theory mind boggling amount of stuff to learn about road users, weights, hight limits road markings driver hours road signs abs jack knifing sheeting securing the load and the list goes on and on still have another 3 modules left to do. ( initial new driver cpc 5 modules).

Module 1.a 1.b
Well now I have passed my theory and hazard and can move on in this journey to the next part . The practical and cpc before I can drive professionaly.

Module 3

I have rang every company advertise as a hgv training school in my area with in a fifty mile radius of West Yorkshire I have managed to stay away from the train now and pay later deals or the we have schools across the country with national pass rate of a 99% and advise you new be wanna be hgv drivers too to not go near them!!!

Now what I have found that in Rotherham and Doncaster Sheffield training companies are a few hundred cheaper 300-400 then ones local to me . East yorkshire is cheaper then training companies In the West Yorkshire region, but i really can’t afford to be traveling back and forth to training center everyday and the thought of doing test in another cite (a city i never drove in)

On phone everybody is positive, helpful will speak to you will tell you how much courses cost make you feel good it’s the things u wanna hear when your starting out. I guess I will not know what it’s like until I try these schools training providers out my self as I don’t have any friends who have trained or done there Hgv licence or many friends that are drivers.

I don’t want to hand money over to just anybody i jave worked hard to save this money to take the leap there is no government funding for these sort of courses You have to invest in your self no body wants to be ripped of

As I have found out that anyone with a hgv licence who has held it for three years can become a hgv training provider how will I and people know and be able to tell the difference from the good bad and ugly training providers who give a bad name to all. Make it hard for us to put our trust in a product or service

Is it better to go with a company that has facilities and school and pay that extra few hundred or some one who is doing a cheap course

They say “that does not include your test fee u pay that towards the test agency” oh another line I have been hearing recently is “we don’t pay any vat on that so we don’t charge you that like most companies out there” " we have been doing driver training for six month "

I have booked some driving assessments this week to gain some experience and even then some people are charging 55 per hour to do them I will be using this time do get some experience behind a 7 and half tonner before booking any courses

would rather loose a £100 then £1000

What sort of things should I be on the look out for how will i know yeah this is the school for me that i want and know will help me get me to my destination of passing not just take my money and say thank you please come again and do that to the next person who is in the same situation as me who has worked hard to get what he wants.

Also if anybody has recently sat the module 2 if they could please describe what they thought of it and what to expect as you people and people that don’t know. There is not much out there for module 2 part of the test Guess it’s just a case of keep paying till u pass

I will be looking to book my cpc and driver training at the same time just need to make sure it’s the right place/people /trainer/provider

I will keep people updated as to what happens when I get behind the wheel of 7.5 for the first time in my life

P.s I am scared of heights

Take care fellow trunkers

If you want to put yourself into a safe pair of hands with a highly recommended accredited trainer then why not contact Peter Smythe the forum sponsor? Do a forum search and you will find many people speak highly of the Peter Smythe team - myself included. He also has some great deals going, 10% trucknet discount, free accommodation for those living out of the area who want to attend block driving courses, free CPC etc etc.

Also on the forum, recommended and not to be overlooked are Elmet Training and Tockwith Training - both have received glowing reviews and I believe they are also in your area. I can personally vouch for Tockwith Training as I did my HIAB training with them and found them to be a great bunch.

Now what I have found that in Rotherham and Doncaster Sheffield training companies are a few hundred cheaper 300-400 then ones local to me .Ask yourself “why?” East yorkshire is cheaper then training companies In the West Yorkshire region, but i really can’t afford to be traveling back and forth to training center everyday and the thought of doing test in another cite (a city i never drove in) Absolutely your choice of course

Go and see them. Sit in the vehicles. Have a look at the facilities (in the unlikely event they’ve actually got some)

I don’t want to hand money over to just anybody i jave worked hard to save this money to take the leap there is no government funding for these sort of courses You have to invest in your self no body wants to be ripped of Quite

As I have found out that anyone with a hgv licence who has held it for three years can become a hgv training provider how will I and people know and be able to tell the difference from the good bad and ugly training providers who give a bad name to all. Make it hard for us to put our trust in a product or service Firstly, ask to see their instructor badge. That will stop most of them in their tracks. It’s a blue badge issued by DVSA with the instructor’s picture on it. Sadly, not a compulsory qualification. But it does demonstrate an accepted level of ability. Going past that, check if they are DVSA Accredited LGV Training Centre. They’re not.

Is it better to go with a company that has facilities and school and pay that extra few hundred or some one who is doing a cheap course Possibly

They say “that does not include your test fee u pay that towards the test agency” oh another line I have been hearing recently is “we don’t pay any vat on that so we don’t charge you that like most companies out there” " we have been doing driver training for six month " You’re sensible enough to have figured this one out.

I have booked some driving assessments this week to gain some experience and even then some people are charging 55 per hour to do them I will be using this time do get some experience behind a 7 and half tonner Why 7.5? before booking any courses

would rather loose a £100 then £1000 I would rather not loose £1

What sort of things should I be on the look out for how will i know yeah this is the school for me that i want and know will help me get me to my destination of passing not just take my money and say thank you please come again and do that to the next person who is in the same situation as me who has worked hard to get what he wants. Taking the assessments is a start. Then trust your gut feeling or go for constant recommendation. Running a good training establishment is considerably more complicated than it may look. Ask yourself the what if? questions. eg vehicle breakdown, instructor sickness, availability of reversing area; the list is almost endless.

Also if anybody has recently sat the module 2 if they could please describe what they thought of it and what to expect as you people and people that don’t know. There is not much out there for module 2 part of the test Guess it’s just a case of keep paying till u pass We provide training free of charge, then the test fee, then the Mod 4 training, test fee and vehicle for test - completely FREE with a course booking.

I will be looking to book my cpc and driver training at the same time just need to make sure it’s the right place/people /trainer/provider

If you want 10% discount and free cpc on top of free b+b accommodation for the duration of the practical course, call the office 01623 620062. Or call in - no appointment needed - for a look around our facilities which are possibly the finest in the midlands. Have an assessment as well - choice of manual or auto. Either way, the truck will be one of our purpose built, bought new, vehicles. (Please make an appointment for an assessment).

Or you could just take your chance.

I will keep people updated as to what happens when I get behind the wheel of 7.5 for the first time in my life

P.s I am scared of heights I’m not keen either!

Take care fellow trunkers

PS Total cost of a course with us is just £1215. This includes 1:1 training (DVSA Reg instructor) test at our private driving test centre on site, VAT, B+B (if more than 70 miles away) and free cpc. That takes some beating. You MUST quote Trucknet to get this deal. Otherwise it’s IRO £1800.

Mr. Smythe isn’t the only training provider on this forum and might not be the closest, but he’s the only one I can personally vouch for. Before I went I’d never even driven a van. Within 4 days I was declared test ready (not sure I felt it), and passed with 4 minors, which was a surprise because I was sure I’d failed when I failed to spot a car as I came out of a junction (and I blocked a pedestrian crossing). There’s a recommended list of trainers somewhere. You shouldn’t be paying for an assessment and should be doing it in the vehicle you will be taking a test on.

Beyond that, my only advice would be to watch the back wheel. That’s where is pivots and so if that’s past something, you’re not going to hit it.

And when you’ve passed Class C, you will be watching the rear corners as well. as an 18t or 26t with rear steer have lots of tail swing that you just don’t get in the little 12t’s used for tests. Enjoy!

Try driving one without rear-steer!

I’ve never driven anything with rear steer! I took a 26t through Alum Rock in Birmingham. Bloody palletways.

Got Class 1 training tomorrow! I haven’t driven a truck for 3 months (back injury, then I decided to have a holiday) and the ■■■ is pouring.

Try this on for size.

That looks entertaining mate!
Thankfully I didn’t do any places like that when i was driving a VAN!
Have you not got a rear camera on your rigid pal? :open_mouth:

And are you booked up yet■■?

Rear camera?! Ha! Boss said to me; “If you need one of those, you shouldn’t be driving a truck!”. A shade over 9 meters long with a massive overhang and no rear steer. The wheels were up when I was going round there. I’m debating on whether to use my last 5 days holiday to do it.

I’m surprised you are thinking of doing a full course, as I’d assume you could get away with a short one! Plus you could do an intensive one over the weekend and sit the test Monday morning. So at worst, that’s only 2 days holiday including the Saturday…
I don’t agree with your boss, as I’ve parked up before and then had a car park right up my chuff hidden from my mirrors. Yes you should always get out and check, but mistakes happen & the cost of a camera isn’t much compared to mangling the odd car, bollard, fence, etc…

That place looks a nightmare I would not want anyone to be driving there! It is do-able just taking it very slow and checking constantly as its only fit for a car really lol!

Hi all

Thanks for all the replies I have got Peter and the rest of the group.

I would just like to let u know where I am at I have had my assessment drives and what I have found

With the first training provider (trust well haulage) they are wanting about 1400 that including cpc they are using a straight six speed gear box only thing that putting me off going here is that the test is in Sheffield.

The second school I when to was (l&t transport Wakefield) they want 1400 too that include cpc and I think twenty hours driving class two they have auto and manual 8speed slap over.

The third school I when to was( thorpes hgv ) they are charging 800 for twenty hours driving they have a manual and automatic trucks.

The bottom two are closest to me I don’t know who to go and train with. Was wondering if anybody has trained with any of the providers that I have been to see this week

I am keen to get started on a five day course and give it a go I don’t want to join and it be a waste of money and time doing the class two training end up making the wrong choice and it costing me more .What would be the best thing for me or anyone in my position to do.

I have tried to find reviews and feedback on the Internet regarding these providers I can not find anything.

Also I am right in thinking if you take your test in a automatic that I will get entitlement to drive manual or auto when I pass. I passed my car driving test in a manual.

research online mate regarding the companies as I have not heard of any of them. As for your last point, you are correct if you already have a manual entitlement on your licence you can do both class 2 and class 1 in auto and get both auto and manual entitlement. But now days its rare to find manual trucks as most companies with new fleets, all have auto trucks.

they are charging 800

Plus test fee. No mention of VAT. If that’s extra that’s another £160.

We are £1215 including driver cpc.

Don’t know how you can beat that. BTW, plenty of extremely positive reviews on t’internet.

Pete

Wannabhgv why not try out peter smythe? maybe have an assesment ? i had one last week with kris , excellent experience out in the 12t, i also had the theory day, which was great too, im about to do my x3 theories tommorow then ill be on the phone for my practical,

Hopefully lol

Sounds like im kissing ahem, but i know how it feels to be a bit unsure on trainers etc, but after visiting the premises and speaking to the staff etc, very knowledgeable, friendly and professional, also im sure pete will be happy to speak with you about it, he was with me, also a bombardment of pms which answered everything i needed to know, really cant recommend highly enough,

And i traveled from somerset, i think some have done further, think evilbizzle came from southampton, think he trained in a van though but not sure lol

Def worth a thought mate.

Beezle will always be a van driving bellend at heart, even though he can also bend now lol

+1 for using Peter, you won’t regret it.

I’m booking my CE with Leter in the morning. Looking forward to getting going with it. Driving rigids just doesn’t do it for me for some reason, I’ve always wanted the artic so it’s now or never!

He he, so will you be using the artic or going out in the other one, cant remember what its called but its basically 2 the same size, like 2 7.5t , drawbar ?

sorry for the noobness but i hear its common which puts me at rest lol,

You’re thinking of the wagon and drag, that’s one of the Cat C rigids with a trailer on.

I’m booking for the full fat artic lol people say the w+d is easier to pass on but I just like the idea of the artic

Yup im feeling the same way tbh as thats where i see myself in the end, but at the same time dont want to hinder passing etc.
