HGV driving is my vocation, I really enjoy my job, but like all drivers in this industry my career could come to an abrupt end should I lose my licence due to ill health, be it poor eyesight, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease etc. I like to keep reasonably fit eat the right foods and all that. But wouldn’t it be good if you could insure your licence and income for a period should your licence be taken away, give you a chance to find new employment, pay for training or even give yourself a well earned break to get back on your feet. Have googled but can’t find an insurer or an idea of cost?

You’re looking for the wrong thing. You need to be insuring your income, not your license, and income insurance is a thing you can buy.
Our union does a thing where if you lose your licence through medical reasons they pay out 8k,it’s an extra 50p a week on your union subs.
I also have income protection as a back up,that’s £19 a month but pays out 80% of my monthly income if I’m out of work through illness/injury/redundancy.

Thanks will have a look into that.
I had some income insurance/mortgage protection insurance many yeas ago.
It wasn’t until I tried to claim on it that I realized that there are so many “small print exceptions” that in effect it’s highly unlikely that you’ll get the cover you actually want or need.
You’re protected from “Sudden Death” effectively where there is no pre-existing condition - but not the onset of a dibilitating illness unless it exactly fits one of those described and defined on the form.
Eg. You’ll get a payout for “Motor Neuron Disease Onset” or “Crohn’s Diseaese” but NOT for “Sciatica” or “Sleep Apnoea” which are FAR more likely to affect a HGV driver.

^ This.Bearing in mind it is possible to be medically discharged from the job while not losing the licence.
As for finding new employment that defeats the object of specific cover for the occupation. On that note you don’t generally find medically discharged train drivers or pilots at the job centre looking for ‘alternative’ employment.More likely in Spain etc enjoying their early retirement or long term sick leave.
My life insurance covers some of what you mention. Any long term illness that would prevent me from returning to my job is covered.
I am in Unite and pay extra for the drivercare which sounds like what you’re looking for.
