just realised i need to inform my insurance company for my car, as it says occupation, which currently says building trades, to driver. i was wondering as a class 1 driver is classed as a professional, would this make it cheaper or would they think you would be tired maybe? an more of a risk?, anybody had any experience on what happened to their premiums for their car after they told the dvla of their new proffession?
i have been lead to believe that it does actually ioncrease them as you are more at risk, like you said due to tiredness after a long day driving.
i tried going for the armed forces route to get discount, before this i was a storeman and insurance was £350 a year, then i asked about armed forces discount and they said yes you get 5%, so i told them i was a storeman in the navy and my premium returned at £560 (after 5% discount) when asked how did that work out " oh, thats because you are a high risk terrorist target!"
oh well, time to switch companies again then and back to being a storeman!
Didnt increase for me, but I ‘lost’ the privelidge of driving other cars.

I thought that ‘fully comp’ insurance allowed a driver to drive some-one elses vehicle with their permission on ‘third party’
I’ve got very good insurance but it is a requirement to be a member of the IAM - well worth the annual IAM fee to obtain such a good deal
Martin Lewis can explain it here.

For instance a musician may be a better title than a rock star, or a dental technician may be a better choice than a night club bouncer although they both remove teeth

Yep it does, unless you are in the motor trade or a professional driver apparently (AXA Direct). Mabye worth giving them a bell to check because I found out I was driving my ma and brothers cars uninsured when my job title changed from “warehouseman” to “lorry driver with warehouse duties!!”

Not automatically, some insurance companies are removing this from their policies so never assume it.

And the reason? If the owner has no insurance but the driver does, it flags up on ANPR camera’s and causes insurance companies headaches trying to prove it (since some policies only cover you in other cars “in emergencies”) - so they’re scrapping it alltogether.
They’re not scrapping it entirely at all, but some companies are doing away with it but for different reasons. To many people are exploiting the feature by insuring a cheap car and driving another more expensive/powerful car under the ability to driver others feature.
I’ve been down on my insurance as a Driver for a few years now so I’ve not specifcally noticed any increases, but to be honest my rates seem fairly favourable compared to other people I know so as long as you shop around you can still get a good deal. There’s no real alternative for Driver though, you might get away with Skilled or Semi Skilled labour, but could be a problem come claim time.
