Insurance for your personal belongings, Does it exist?

Hi, i have been looking into insuring the kit that i take with me on the road, such as fridge, laptop, satnaff, clothing, passport.driving licence cash & cards for theft and loss due to unforeseen circumstances, such as a RTA ect
I have heard wrongly it would seem that Home contents insurance with cover this, i my case it don’t due to the fact that i would be away from home for more than 60days in any 12mths period, and 2 things such as a portable fridge or ff won’t be covered,
I also am aware that a drivers personal effects are covered by the companies vehicle insurance, but there is no way that the company would allow such a claim, nor would i expect them to,

Does any one know if it’s actually possible to get such insurance & who provides it ?

but there is no way that the company would allow such a claim, nor would i expect them to,

why? If they are paying the premium for the cover why would they not accept a genuine claim?
can’t help with any suggestions however

Because they make it very clear from the start that personal belongings are taken at your own risk, as they are not a requirement of the job, things such as fridges microwaves sat naffs and laptops ect are creature comforts that the driver chooses to take with him/her some time ago one vehicle got hi jacked, the 2 drivers in it lost most of their stuff, boss would not pay them they didn’t get a penny most companies i think would take the same stance,

can’t see the distinction between creature comforts and essentials.
IF your boss is paying insurance premiums to cover effects in the cab , why on earth would he not make a claim?
If he is not going to make a claim surely he should remove that cover from his premiums.
I agree that most bosses don’t cover you for loss of personal belongings but in yourOP you claim that your boss does but would not entertain a claim nor would you expect him to.
Bloody sure that IF my boss did cover my effects I would expect him to forward a claim on my behalf in the event of a loss.
check with your boss wether items are covered or not before you spend any money.
if you need to get cover yourself ring around a few brokers, someone will cover you…at a price!
Maybe even an extension to your household policy.

Well i don’t know if all insurers automatically cover the drivers personal effects or not, but in any event there will almost certainly be an excess voluntary or compulsory with one employer it was £500.00,
and it would be up to the employer if a claim was to be allowed or not for a drivers kit,i have never heard of a driver claiming on the companies insurance for loss from theft or accidental damage before, unless they had been involved in a non fault accident
As for it being covered by a simple extension of a normal household contents insurance if only it was that simple, i have rang several insurance companies and none can do this, as said
1, would be away from home more than 60 days in any 12mth period (contents)
2 they won’t insure certain items (personal belongings) and again due to the 60 day rule no contents non personal effects insurance that’s the way they play it would seem, maybe the Contact Us - BIBA can point me to an insurer who specialises in this sort of insurance, i would imagine it being similar to caravan contents insurance if such a thing exists

When I had my accident 11 years ago, and lost my personal posessions in the crash, I claimed under my household policy.

Ken.

most vehicle insurance will only cover up to £250 personal belongings

that is what mine does, and also there is a £250 excess :unamused:

so, if the vehicle is stolen, valued at £10,000, plus the £250 personal belongings, - £250 excess, leaves £10,000 for the claim

i suppose it would be down to the employer and employee to fight it out between them for the excess payment

Are you sure you’ve read that right on your policy?

Is it an accumulated sixty days or a maximum of 60 days any one trip?

well from what 2 insurers have said to me yesterday it is accumulative “more than 60 days away from home in any one year” i did query that bit, as i would mostly only be away upto 2-3 weeks at a time, so as a result of that they wouldn’t be able to insure my belongings either, plus they for one reason or another will not insure a waeco fridge/freezer , all i want is cover for all my kit say £2,000 max without any excesses i for the life of me can’t see why it has to be so difficult

When I was working before I retired, I had confirmation in writing that my personal effects taken to work were covered on my household contents insurance.
I sent them an email detailing what I would take to work and they confirmed, by letter, that everything was covered. This included laptop, TV, fridge, sat-nav etc, and also cover for credit card fraud should they be stolen.

Mine were always covered by my household insurance, I just gave them a list of all the stuff and it was sorted.

This refers to girl guides, but reading it, might be worth contacting this ins. co.

The 60 days is crap, either that or the insurance company is. My previous landlady goes to to New Zealand for 6 months every year, and her UK home is still insured as were the contents, in the house, the caravan, the garage and the shed I kept my motorcycle in. Mine was a separate flat in the grounds.

If I wanted to insure all this extra stuff, I would take a look at motorhome contents insurance, although anything I have had in a truck has been insured by my household cover.

Ditto.

Wheelnut I beg to differ. Most insurers stipulate a maximum time a property can be left unoccupied.
Which ins co. are you with OP? Insurer not broker.

I think the 60days rule is crap too, but 2 different insurance companies say the same, I was thinking motor home/caravan contents cover, but you would think that someone would offer standalone personal effects insurance, for the professional driver or any mobile worker who spends days/weeks away from home

Well finally i found one insurance company who even provide cover if the vehicle is unattended (was an add on) as most don’t do it not cheap though @ £190
