Insurance for a private hgv

I am about to purchase a 2001 Scania Bullnose for showing and private use only. I have been informed that the vehicle will then be a private hgv. The problem is trying to get insurance for it especially as it is not a classic, and also because I am not a professional hgv driver. Does anyone know of insurance companies that may insure me?
Thank you
Gerard

As the training schools have their LGVs insured as private then maybe they will PM you with their insurance company details :bulb:

Oh I do hope so!

Have you tried the NFU? 08003164661

Although its not a classic it would be worth asking, and telling them you intend to use it for shows.

If its a show vehicle they also include £5 million worth of public liability cover too, and breakdown if you want it.

Good luck!

Oh and don’t forget to get your tax class changed to Private HGV at your local DVLA office!

It’s unlikely that a specialist provider of insurance for driver training would offer you what you want. But it’s well worth ringing Footman James 0121 561 4196. They excel at “unusual” risks. Talk to Kevin Askill and tell him I recommended them.

I used Footman James for 20+ years for all my insurance; they’re splendid but a more competitive offering came from another source so I reluctantly changed.

Good luck. Pete

I certainly will do thank you. I have had one quote for 1600 quid so far, great if he can beat that!!

Gerard,

For what you want to do with your unit, £1600 is plainly extortionate.

Try Footman James by all means but I don’t like them.

Adrian flux I use and so far have had no problems.

NFU have by far been the cheapest for me.

Please DO NOT pay any more than £200 for your insurance. You only have to explain to them it is a show vehicle.

Just thought, do Roadsure still do hgv’s? they might be worth a bell.

Wow, if I paid 500 quid for insurance I would be happy! Forgive my ignorance but how would one convert the Scania Bullnose into a show vehicle? I am now thinking again of spending a couple of hundred to fix permanent bed, table, chair, cooker, storage space, etc to make it into a motorcaravan and insure it as such. This may be my cheapest option!!!

I was quoted 540 today but only on the grounds that I can convert the Scania Bullnose into a motorhome, which I may do now. Im sure it will only cost a couple of hundred to do the conversion thus saving nearly 1000 a year on insurance. It has proved very difficult to get the Bullnose insured for private use only. Ive managed to get it down to 1500 to keep it as it is.
