I reckon Lucy has assessed the situation correctly and drivers shouldn’t worry about the takeover in the short term. By fortunate coincidence I interviewed Pete Osbourne as the takeover contract went through for the bosses’ mag ‘Motor Transport’. Here’s a few pertinent extracts:
'I last met Pete Osborne at Truckfest in the early ‘90s with a high-spirited team of drivers cheerfully polishing colourful tractor units from his Pete Osborne Logistic fleets. From a haulage background, ‘It’s in my blood, I learned the benefits of hard work ethic early,’ Osborne started the enterprise with a single truck financed by the sale of his car, team drove it with his wife Melanie and over the course of a decade developed a million pound a year turnover company before selling out to Stiller.
'Osborne is disarmingly honest in admitting dyslexia gave him no choice but to delegate…
On the takeover: ‘It’s given us a worldwide opportunity to link between continents, the US and Russia. Absolutely phenomenal, our customers over here are the customers they’re dealing with over there.
‘(Operationally) they never bother us one bit, but they’re always coming up with new ideas. Eimskip don’t just think about how much things cost but how you can add value in other areas. You might spend £5milion, but gain a lot more, their expansion plans and ours are very similar.’
'Innovate has reached a consolidation point, (this is) what we’re working on now and for the next 12 months …to pursue profit not turnover. Now we’ll only take in strategic buys to add value.’
The Eimskip Group claims to be the biggest transport company in both the North Atlantic and Iceland. Also operates in Russia/Baltic and Americas and Asia.
Includes Air Atlana and Containerships
Employs 8500 people at 154 bases in 21 countries
Has a yearly group turnover of 1.838 billion USD

Despite my being an unrepetent old lefty the fact remains Pete has built two haulage firms up from very little - they’re his to sell, but that dosen’t neccesarily mean he’s sellingh his drivers down the road.

I’ve got to ask, Hollie - if you hate it as much as all your posts say you do, why are you still there■■?

Got to admit, if the pay rate was better + the night out rate, I’d seriously consider going there. They’ve been advertising in the local paper for day, night, and tramping drivers out of Holmewood. Trouble is they would need to nearly double the rate to get near what I’m earning, so think I’ll be travelling to Brum for a while yet.

I am aware that the drivers at Corby, Alcester, have given their union a mandate for strike action, but I’m not aware of this being the case at other depots, although I believe that Corby, Heywood, have been obliged to accept a pay reduction.

Whilst they do employ some Eastern European drivers, in my experience, they tend to be in the minority. Certainly I’m not aware of similar tales to those that have befallen certain East Anglian hauliers that have gone for a higher concentration of non-indigenous employees.
There are certainly improvements that can be made. I highlighted one wasteful practice HERE on a previous thread, although that now seems to have been resolved, but there is still evidence of a lack of, for want of a better word, ‘talent’ in both the day to day running of the various Transport offices, and the manner in which customers are required to relate to drivers. As a recent example, I was with a driver at a collection and, upon his arrival, the ‘despatch’ manager was unable/unwilling to give him an approximate departure time. After something like two hours on site, he was informed that his departure would be something like three hours hence. A total of five hours; which meant that he would run out of hours. Contacting his Transport office, they (eventually) arranged for another vehicle and ‘pulled’ him out. Had this information been available at the time of his arriva,l then two hours of his contracted hours, and two hours of ‘vehicle downtime’ could have been avoided.
Situations such as this, which are totally avoidable providing the parties have an obligation to ‘communicate’ should be charged back to the customer.
The situation is not helped by the fact that the cabphones in Corby vehicles only allow calls back to the Transport office. There is no facility to liaise with suppliers as to when a load might be ready. Drivers have to attend the premises and, if the delay is likely to be considerable, they might then avail themselves of a meal at a truckstop which they passed 15-20 minutes prior. Which does not bode well for vehicle utilisation and fuel savings.
Even worse, is when a vehicle from another depot is then based at a sister satellite. The cabphone will only dial back to ‘base’ location’, and therefore the driver is unable to contact their own office.
Whilst not being a mobile phone ‘geek’, surely the inclusion/deletion of phone numbers for current/previous customers, can be done carried out by the Service Provider by way of a SIM download.
And another thing.
I think those polo shirts with orange panels look bloody stupid.

Whats the pay rates steve?
I’ve lost the sheet Jon, but it was something like 6.56 an hour for the first 50 time and a half after, 45 mins a day off for break. 10 a day for paperwork and Dynafleet being ok, a meal allowance, and 17 night out. They said Trampers run Tues to Sat each week.
When I worked it out, I would need to do full hours every week to match what I can earn on a 50 hrs week.
Krankee
You’ll find many of the delays are due to customers having production problems or the supermarkets placing late orders, this is a problem for most chilled food distribution.
It was regular when I worked for wincanton’s on chilled consolidation, I’ve waited nearly 4 hours for 1 pallet to arrive in Milton Keynes, this pallet was then loaded on it’s own on to a double decker and which I dragged up to Trafford Park, completing yet another 15 hour spread.
As for communincation it’s the same everywhere, Penny Pinching or as is most likley some head office wally who’s never driven a truck comes up with a great system on paper, problem is we work in the real world
bit i read on a wall at one depot [corby ] implied there was going to be a cut in hours but not pay ,so in theory your hourly rate would go up , but you wouldnt actually earn anymore if im reading it right
