DAVE I believe you will find that a British passport is a requirement as most of the EU
country have a Identity card , you could ask at this PLACE; THEY can answer the question
Dave better than any one else , hope this helps
One more point Dave here in Germany I can tell you
it will be big trouble if you get asked for the passport and do not have
one, I have to carry my passport where ever I go and it has to be in date
You can’t do it with just your driving licence so I can’t see how the driver card would be any different.
As the UK has never been part of the Schengen agreement you need a nationally accepted identity document unlike other EU countries who have ID cards Brits need to have a valid passport

I tried to draw some money at Ashford Truckstop as the machine was out of order again. She asked for some ID, my driver card was not sufficient although my driving licence was accepted.
I was being a tad awkward with her because she said I must have a passport as it was an international truckstop, she relaxed her viewpoint when I asked her why there were two local Supermarket trucks parked near the window
alledgedly you can enter and exit calais-dover with a driving licence but you can’t travel without a passport in europe as the uk is not a member of schengen, no passport means a fine

As do the Irish and Danes!
Yeh they p&o at dover and Calais except a photocard licence didn’t know that if you got stopped by the police they could fine you for not having a passport, lucky i never got stopped then eh?
bloody stupid if you ask me but rules is rules
I left my truck in Spain for a weekend once, and when I flew back out the Easy jet desk gave me my ticket without any problems, but when I went to board the plane they noticed my passport had expired 3 months earlier
They let me on the plane, but said they wouldn’t let me fly back, no problem as I was going to drive, but I had been driving around Europe for 3 months with an out of date passport and nobody noticed…Just goes to show how thorough the checks are at the ports around the UK
I travelled about 5 years ago from Dover to Calais with no passport and just driving licence photocard with no problems. Had no problems getting back in on the train either, it helped that I had my passport number with me though that i got from the Mrs on the phone.
when flying out of stansted for example you can leave the uk without any document at all - you check-in online with your passport no, so no checking at the airport, the securities don’t care about your travel documents, no border check for outging passengers.
Though I doubt very much they would let you in on the other side without a travel doc.
There are border checks in ports; sometimes they hardly look at what you’re showing them, so maybe they mistook driver card for an EU country ID■■?
Or somebody got confused with driver and seaman cards…
2 weeks ago P&O let me sail sail Calais to dover when i went to book on and couldnt find my passport in my cab also just showed my driving licence photo bit to he british customs in their little post and she said to me " you look british off yopu go and try to find your passport for next week"(found it,it had fallen behind the draw on the dash on a MAN TGX)
