Reported on BBC. Too much information, and drivers cannot process everything.
With our 6 mirrors to check, cyclists and pedestrians seemingly trying to throw themselves under our wheels, etc, is it any wonder we sometimes fail to see a sign in time to avoid a restriction?
6 mirrors on a motorway can be bad enough especially in the rain, so adding in a load of signs doesn’t help. But then we’re “professional drivers” so we can’t be given any leniency to occasionally get it wrong.
Cant imagine trying to drive through London all the time with all the tome restrictions. Never enough time to try to read the signs there.
Oh as for this case, WTF is a “bus gate”!?

A bus gate isn’t exactly a gate, it’s an open road that only buses are allowed to use and some are camera monitored others are not.
We have got several in Norwich and a couple of them are currently monitored and are a big money cow. My partner’s son and 3 of his mates got caught on 1 of them last year on their mopeds and got fined £60 for the privilege.

This has got me thinking. Doesn’t happen very often, but usually turns something up.
AFAIK bus gate isn’t a legally recognized term. It’s a bus lane, pure and simple. And there are specific regulations for marking them too.
As you will note from the above link, there are NO permitted variations from the legal markings. Anyone who has been caught by one of these might want to take proper advice about challenging any fine/penalty on these grounds.
I’ve looked at Essex council’s photos of the “bus gate” signage at that location and they do indeed appear to be missing the “Only” plate that must be displayed under the blue circular signs (according to the Traffic Signs Manual).
Class action coming up?
It’s all a load of ■■■■■■■■, sour grapes by a few people who have been caught redhanded.
It’s been closed to regular traffic for years, the signage is clear enough but people have been getting away with it and got the arse when they put the camera on it. There’s plenty of space to stop and turn around before actually committing to the bridge.
They should hammer these idiots harder for taking the ■■■■.
I have never seen the term “Bus gate” before and if it wasn’t for it being in the news I still wouldn’t have a clue. No sign of it in my copy of the highway code either so If I came upon one I wouldn’t have a clue.
Perhaps the OP suggested “Busgate” as in “Watergate”?

BusGate was in the original BBC piece. Not my idea.
Pity that lazy journos affix ‘gate’ anywhere to denote any form of mischief.
(Always a cue to remember Ms Lovelace however)

Bus Gate is painted on the road both sides on the entrance to the arch way.
Ironic really as it’s only suitable for single deckers and has in the past lopped a few top decks off!
I walked into town this evening and decided to look with fresh eyes. To be fair it could be signed better, but I can’t imagine that many people would even need to go through there as it is comprehensively bypassed by other better roads. Locally it’s well known and has been for years.
Looking at street view it would seem that maybe Google were one of the offenders!
