There are an increasing number of hi-jacks of goods vehicles reported in the Paris area using police impersonation techniques. The areas concerned are the outer Paris ring road, ‘La Francilienne,’ and the areas near Peages where trucks are slowing down with a view to stopping or travelling more slowly than normal. There is evidence of goods vehicles being specifically targeted and followed for a considerable distance before being subjected to such attacks. French police say truck drivers should note that it is extremely unusual for police to bring a moving goods vehicle to a halt. Where this is required such activity is undertaken only by uniformed officers using marked vehicles. In the very rare instances where circumstances dictate that an unmarked police vehicle must be used to halt a moving goods vehicle, both a flashing blue light and a two-tone siren are used along with controlled hand signals. In the police impersonation cases reported, only a flashing blue light has been used and the ‘police officers’ use threatening gestures. They further advise that genuine police officers will respond positively to signs indicating the driver’s willingness to proceed to the nearest police or Gendarmerie station.
