Incident/Report of Obstruction/Animals/Pedestrians etc etc

simcor:
Every night heading down the M1 south we get a report of obstruction on the signs. Night after night it is no wonder people ignore the signs, when you have a false message up night after night. I can’t believe there is an obstruction every single night on that stretch of the motorway. And if there was an obstruction why were the wombles and or police not called to deal with it and get it cleared and the signs removed.

Usually around J31 or J30 when the message starts, I’ve seen it every night for god knows how long. In fact the only time I don’t see it is when there are other messages up for roadworks there.

There must be a lot of instructions every single night on that stretch.

Is there a lot of roadworks in that area? In my experience, a lot of debris reports are due to vehicles clipping cones and knocking them into the carriageway, these are then hit by heavies the plastic cone gets dragged along by the heavy, the next heavy hits the base and catapults it into the nearside verge. 7 or 8 vehicles back haven’t seen this so carry on oblivious that there had been a cone. Several miles down the road, the cone gets spit out and rolls on to the hard shoulder, and the highways/police patrols report no trace and cancel the signs.

It’s shown whether there is or inst roadworks, when there is roadworks it’s usually saying roadworks then you get the odd sign that says obstruction. It just makes me laugh every time I see it night after night.

You’ll have no problems with endless gantries showing obstruction on my stretch of the network - we don’t have any, we’re the land that time forgot!

I’ll grant that traffic densities may be lower on your patch (most times) but I’ve noticed that it flows far more freely there and scenery notwithstanding it tends to be a pleasurable drive. Perhaps the lack of gantries helps with that?

In the same way that when the traffic lights fail at certain junctions the traffic actually flows better!

Lack of technology can have it’s problems when it comes to dealing with serious incidents, we just have what lights we can provide ourselves with limited electronic signage. That said, we can lose a lane and traffic still flows freely.

This. M6 is the same going down most nights. Usually obstruction or pedestrians is the latest favourite. I can see queue ahead warnings when I’m leaving the yard and they’re still there when I’m going home at 4am on an empty motorway lol.

Poor driving skills then, It used to be a Night Trunk pastime to ‘Tiddlywink’ the cones with the leading tire of the trailer, just catch the outer 1cm or a bit less of the base & it would fly away from the driving lanes. Good way to practice width awareness & driving skills.

It does happen.

After all if you had just seen a Lion / panther / Leopard etc you would probably want to tell someone too.

Most “Big Cat” sightings in the UK actually turn out to be black labradors.
