, because if you just stick to the limit posted then you’ll not succumb to them.
That’s easy to say if you’re hourly paid, but if you’re job & knock it’s a different kettle of fish.
Do you want to have a few minutes to reconsider that?
No thanks.
So, sticking to the signed limit to avoid fines, is dependent upon how you are paid?
Being on jobnknock may be a temptation for some to drive faster, but it certainly isn`t a valid reason to do so, nor is it a factor on whether or not fines are imposed.
Of course I didn’t say it was a valid reason to not be fined!

You’re kidding…
Me right? You’re saying the risk of a £90 ticket and the points is worth hopping the limit by a few miles an hour to gain almost nothing in journey time?
The important word you used is risk. Go faster and you almost certainly will get there faster it’s almost guaranteed.
If you’re careful about looking out for cameras then the risk is something the individual can weigh up.

I’m in two minds about what you are condoning, are you advocating keeping on the limiter when the gantries go to 50, or in a 40 picking the lane with the most space and encouraging any looser in your way to move over, you are in a hurry after all.

It could be 3,4 or 5 clear lanes at 3:00 in the morning,
Does a temporary speed limit stop the requirement to drive on the left unless overtaking?

The important…
Word you used is almost.
Very true. Slowly, slowly catchee monkey springs to mind. I followed a guy back from Wisbech to Peterborough last week, he was empty and I was heavily loaded, he anchored up at every roundabout in a cloud of blue smoke whereas I looked way ahead and rolled up gently behind him without once coming to a standstill. Fifteen miles later I was still right behind him.
Interesting signature btw when I was a (admittedly lacklustre) professional racer I was known as the King of the late brakers. Mainly because I was fat and slow and had to make the time up somewhere!

So work faster and when the TM piles more work on , you throw toys out
Exactly. I used to have a job & knock gig, it worked brilliantly until one driver decided to abuse the system. Guess what happened then? No more job and knock for everyone due to Mr Minimal-required-effort When redundancies came, guess who was top of the pile? Then he ended up at a bigger-named firm where all the trucks were tracked all the time (ours weren’t), he was not a happy bunny
If the job is so obnoxious to a driver that they must take every opportunity to eliminate every single minute from the working day that is possible, I’d suggest they’re in the wrong job.
They have trouble knowing where the incident is ,a lot of the time.I remember going past the Coalville turn on the m1 junction 22.A car in front spun round in the wet and ended up pointing the opposite way. When I called 999,he asked me what junction it was but I couldnt remember the number so I told the operator it was the Coalville turn off. They called me back later asking me where the incident was. They were at j26!.I couldnt believe the operator couldnt have checked the map.
Btw,I checked the date of the OP ,for the benefit of those that want to pull me up on that
Every night heading down the M1 south we get a report of obstruction on the signs. Night after night it is no wonder people ignore the signs, when you have a false message up night after night. I can’t believe there is an obstruction every single night on that stretch of the motorway. And if there was an obstruction why were the wombles and or police not called to deal with it and get it cleared and the signs removed.
Usually around J31 or J30 when the message starts, I’ve seen it every night for god knows how long. In fact the only time I don’t see it is when there are other messages up for roadworks there.
There must be a lot of instructions every single night on that stretch.
Every morning the A1M north near Alconbury has the matrix flashing a 50 limit with the warning “queue on slip road” (for Sawtry). There’s never a queue, further more if every single resident of Sawtry picked that exact time to exit the motorway there still wouldn’t be a queue.

As I understand it, and Boss Hog if he’s about will be able to tell me I’m right or wrong, but an incident or event or whatever is reported on a stretch, the gantries and such are activated to give warning, a patrol os then sent to the area and will do a manual sweep where a further decision is taken on what happens next.
Now there is a huge issue with “reports” and that’s the reason they are called “reports” in that someone has reported something. The accuracy of this then also determines the response. For instance how many 999 programs where they’ve played the call reporting an accident between J9 and J10 of the M5 (just an example) instead of going its by marker post 149.5 B on the M5? Not many… so already the lack of info means a larger area needs to be covered. And that’s also not forgetting problems that are no longer problems - ie the car driver that swerved because there’s some polystyrene board in the live lane may report that, yet the truck driver a minute behind has already rolled over it and destroyed it, in which case you’ll get signs activated. The car that’s one minute behind the lorry that has smashed the polystyrene board sees nothing at all and wonders what the signs even up for.
There’s a fundamental thing here and that is the driver. In all my years driving, not once have I been done by a variable speed limit, not in the UK, not in many other countries in Europe that have them, because if you just stick to the limit posted then you’ll not succumb to them.
Yep, as you say it, the signs get set for a report of debris. They will only get cancelled if the debris gets cleared by ourselves or the police. A lot of people see the signs and no debris, that’s because it’s been cleared and the signs are in the process of being cancelled. Our control centres are subject to a number of key performance indicators (KPIs) not cancelling the signs is a KPI failure and subject to a health and safety investigation. We can be fined by the roads watchdog for constantly failing KPIs so the signs are cancelled as soon as practicable.

999 operators aren’t routinely aware of the marker post/junction numbering like Highways operators are. I’ve long suggested that an emergency number for the motorway network should be introduced. Failing that, ring the National Highways contact centre on 0300 123 5000 and they’ll pass it to the nearest control room and task a patrol, the control room will also inform the other emergency services who are needed.

So what’s the excuse for the M1 saying “report of obstruction” night after night every time I go down it then. Must be a lot of obstructions on that stretch all the time.
