In At The Deep End

Hey ! i have one for you! is it normal for companies to throw new drivers in at the deep end ? I started new job , my first C+E job at that , i was sent off to a yard to shunt trailers was on my own never having done anything like this before , had to open curtains take out posts the lot ,haul off the empties & replace with loaded ones , Nightmare small yard, small box to drop trailer in , was totally out off my comforf zone , took me ages to get trailer in box well if you could call it in that is, an a non to happy yard forman due to the time it took me . Finished the day down dirty an thinking was this what all the hard work & money passing my test was for ?

You’re a newbie with a job and you’re complaining? You need to read some other newbies posts here.

sounds like a hard day

In at the deep end?
If you got through the shift without damaging anything look at it as a positive experience. When you get out on the road and to that dreaded “first drop” you now have the experience to get backed on to a bay without too much hassle and you know how to deal with curtains and post etc. Nothing worse than getting to a delivery and not knowing how to open the trailer!!

Might not be normal, maybe they wanted to try you out in the safety of the yard. Quite sensible really!!!

It’s too late for editing posts rubberfrog/misterg44. You’re busted!!! :grimacing:

What exactly were you expecting? It doesn’t seem a particularly unusual day’s work, especially for somebody who is new.

It sounds like that is ideal, it is certainly the way I learned the job, just change none too happy foreman to none too happy boss :stuck_out_tongue:

i would be confident now to send OP to a customer and not dread the phone ringing in the middle of the night.

To my mind, “being thrown in at the deep end” means passing your test on Tuesday and being sent to Southern Italy on Wednesday, something which has happened to more than one person I know.

Yes but that back in the days when you got your licence because you wanted to do the job and not because it seemed a good idea at the time and it will give a few work credits.

I don’t see why you are complaining.
I went on a free day out with a class one driver, two weeks after passing my C+E and in the same day was offered a weekend out in a new Scania all around the country. Started at 9.00 pm Friday, 1st drop was Bedford at 12.00am Friday/Sat and first real reverse park was between two other trucks on a bay, then off to Doncaster and then Spalding. Stop for the day and sleep whilst my trailer was left in the yard for a fill up at 2.00am next day( first real uncouple as well) .Then off to Weston super Mare to unload it myslef at Lidle. Got home Sunday at 3.00 pm. absolutely knackered but had the best time doing it.

I am still amazed that someone was prepared to let me drive their truck and that I was able to do the run without any issue. I have since had a number of trunk runs both day and night at short notice and have never found one thing to complain about. For all of the jobs I was given the keys and a manifest and left to get on with it, I learn fast and try to be methodical in my approach but when you start you have to be glad of any work and the last thing to do is start ■■■■■■■■ about how hard it has been.
Look at the other new drivers on here that are still looking for work weeks or moths ater they passed their tests and maybe reflect on the fact that you could just be sitting at home watching Jeremy kin Kyle all day. Get over it or get a different job.

Jeramy kyles quite entertaining but these lads r right once you can reverse you wont be worried about reversing in some little yard between trailers with lorries n cars blocking you alright first few days are hard you’ve never been on your own but with experience it gets easier trust me you l b glad you did that shunting.
