In and out like a yoyo!

The local Council recycling wagon drivers, are now jumping in and out of the cab ,and putting recycling bins into the truck. :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Yet they leave the engine running and the drivers door unlocked :unamused:

How can they be in full control of the vechile ,if they are jumping in and out of the cab like a yoyo! :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

There used to be 3 people per truck ,now its 2.(Council cuts)

Why are police turning a blind eye to this…is it going to take death before they do anything :unamused:

It,s not safe ,and should be stopped . :open_mouth:

Have to agree, have noticed this round our way and watching them it does seem like a recipe for a runaway truck or run over co-worker.

Engine running for PTO?

About the same as every other engine driven PTO equipped vehicle then.

The PTO is engine driven, that’s why we leave it running.
I must admit, I do jump out and help my crew out, I personally can’t just sit there all day long watching the other 2 struggling and sweating their balls off. Also, with me jumping in and out, it gets us done quicker.

Police are not ā€œturning a blind eyeā€ to an offence, as (in the case of a bin wagon with a compactor and hydraulic bin lifts on the back) no offence is being committed.

When I did a recycling round I even when a street away from my truck :open_mouth: but the loaders where near by and some times the dustmen where in same street any way

If you got caught doing this at are council you would be sacked.

Alot of council waste is now collected by a private firm. Thats why its 2+1 driver.

We have guys driving solo sometimes, I think its only when they are doing big bins at commercial premises.

Solo?? Never!!

I’ve always fancied going on the bins (mainly as that’s where I was conceived), is it still a good job, sweet hours, crimbo tips, pension, craic with the lads etc.
Or has elf and safety buggered it up which ironically if me pappy had chose this method on the bins would have made this post impossible.

Its not a good job really, just about pays the bills to be honest. We do have a laugh on my crew, you gotta do it, makes the day more interesting and bearable. The thing that really winds me up though, is the abuse we get for doing our job. I know it’s not a glamourous job by any means, but it’s an honest day work.

I work in the waste industry. (Not a binman though) All your waste (well Greater Manchester’s) comes into our facilities and the bin lads complain that the job has gone to ā– ā– ā– ā– . Longer hours, longer routes, less staff. Used to be job and knock. Not anymore. Don’t think they’ve had a pay rise for a couple of years either.

Ones I’ve seen have been recycling wagons with no compactor where they sort the stuff into it.

The driver is there chucking bits of polythene and newspapers in the back. Then he jumps back in the cab shoots forward 10ft and has half slipped back out the cab before the parking brake is clicked on.

It also breaks up awareness of cyclists and pedestrians that might have got near to the vehicle unnoticed while the driver was out of the cab. When I’ve seen them there wasn’t a massive amount of mirror checking going on, if any, each time they jumped back in.

Considering the amount councils like to go on about risk assessments the several times I’ve observed the operation it’s looked pretty risky to me. Ok in a milk float not in a lorry though.
