"Improved mirrors to become mandatory for all HGVs"

Was there a time when it was fashionable to have skylark setting on mirrors, like you Eddie i seem to spend a lot of time putting mirrors back down to give some visibility on the important stuff, quite why you need to see the top of the trailer at halfway point in the middle of the mirror i haven’t worked out yet.

Wonder if such settings and all these ripped out by the roots lower steps on so many tractors are related in any way ? :bulb: :open_mouth:

When was the last time you saw a bus reversing?

Buses reverse out of the stands at at least three local bus stations, all with passengers onboard. Even National Express and the other operators back out of the stands at Stansted airport too.

I like to have Windows all around so i also see there anything too. I just do Shiftwork and mustnt sleep in the Cab. But wot i do,in and around London i’d like to see as much as possible.
But,
Too often comes anyone by surprise out of the Shadow of one of my Mirrors. That Way im not doing much more then 25 in London.

Radar19:
The new requirement is a larger plan area that the driver has to be able to see on the passenger side of the vehicle. This has been increased from the existing requirement of 2m to 4.5m from the side of the truck adjacent to the cab.

It is performance based, rather than prescribing particular mirrors, so a combination of Class VI (wide angle) and V (close proximity) mirrors is permissible to meet the requirement.

this is a damned good thing .seemingly they are only changing specification of lens to give wider angle of vision .

why is it 20 years to late tho ? why are they not retrofitting this standard ■■

im unsure if this will change the actual positioning of mirrors to give this field of vision tho .

main mirrors need to be positioned so that driver looks DOWN on to them which aids FOV . like scania , iveco and renault .

the set ups on DAFs where by you look across , or even UP , at main mirror is ludicrous as it inhibits FOV

also scania mirrors are set even further down door as window aperture slopes down at front , giving far better vision .especially compared with DAF square portholes that seem to be exactly the same doors as a SeddonA stratocruiser from god nows how many years ago .

why are these not being outlawed too ?

simply because PACCAR doesnt want to invest in tooling costs .

in the meantime how many cars are going to be squashed by lefthooker on middle lane of MWay and how many cyclists will be killed by obsolete DAFs .

do we really have to wait for all these deathtraps to be scrapped ?

nice try EU , but you really need to go much much further .

One of the Swedish manufacturers are trailing do away with mirrors and replacing them with cameras and screens in the cab.

This is why cyclists and motorcyclists are getting knocked over. I’ve started it just before something I’ve had happen to me in an artic. You should watch more of this guys’ Youtube videos. Quite how he’s not dead yet I don’t know.

Funny how Boris Johnson and the rest seem completely unaware that those who are getting killed and injured ride like this and are the makers of their own demise.

Other videos of his are much worse. He weaves in and out of static/almost static traffic where there is barely room to fit his handlebars through every time he comes to a build up, even driving at right angles across the front of vehicles.

Bring back Zannetti mirrors! Seems to me as though there will be more mirror than window and that isn’t good, besides seeing behind/down each side/underneath, you still need a good field of vision to see distance both sideways and forward and there are plenty of blind spots already on vehicles, cars included. We have all missed spotting approaching vehicles hidden from sight behind door pillars etc, even more obstructions wont help there.

Pete.

I might be cynical, but I’d question whether this is more about Accountability than Visibility.
It’s a given that pulling out, or onto a roundabout because you missed something hidden behind the mirror is clearly your fault.
Maybe the powers that be feel they just need to shore making it more your responsibility when some lemming jumps into your blind spots!

I’m not at all opposed to better mirrors. (if they are better…)
I would just like to see some efforts to educate cyclists to look out for themselves, even learn the highway code!

its all about cost.

its far cheaper to blame trucks and force fitment of better mirrors than build cycle lanes that the lycra clad tossers wont use in any case.

Personally I think cameras and dash displays should be the norm pretty soon. The prices are starting to come down and anyway, the DVR is the costly bit, cameras and monitors for “live” use only would be way safer than mirrors any day

alamcculloch:
Some thing ought to be done about the tiny mirrors that are fitted to service buses they spend most of their time in urban areas. The coaches are better with their elephant ears type mirrors.

I drive service buses, our vision is far better than a lorrys. we sit lower and have better vision of the nearside.

It really all depends on the bus or the lorry. Some are better than others on both but a bus being a rigid vehicle is going to have less blind spots than an articulated truck.

It’s all about the mirrors being kept clean adjusted properly and having an alert driver.

All very well till the “black box” fails; and they do. You’re then left totally blind, apart from the front view obviously; at least if you bust one mirror you’ve still got four or five to get you to safety.

I have no visibility problems in my obsolete XF106. I also have so much space in my SSC that I am considering taking in a lodger. I fear that you may need to go to specsavers.

Nodding Donks

1 : Park your car alonside n/s front wheel of your death trap .

2 : Take a pic of it in your main mirror from normal driving position

3 : Prepare to eat humble pie .

Bit past your bed time surely?

I can see my car perfectly well in two mirrors. but then I have both mirrors properly adjusted.

This humble pie is good. Would you like some?

Nope i work pms

BTW i dont believe a word of it .

Now move car 3ft away from n/s wheel .

You cant see a thing .

You can fit all the mirrors you want, but you can’t legislate against stupidity and a feeling of invincibility…

Do Pickfords move goalposts too?

Whilst delivering DCPC last week a driver mentioned his N/S wide angle mirror had got smashed. His manager sent him to the workshop (not their own) who removed it and said its ok because he doesn’t need it as long as he has 1 mirror each side. :open_mouth:

This was two weeks before Christmas and he’s been driving like that since. His job involves mainly Town/City deliveries so plenty of cyclists and it’s an 18t vehicle. He hasn’t been defecting it either.

I sometimes struggle to comprehend how some people think. So no matter what rules/laws they invent - with drivers/managers/mechanics like this it’ll make no difference anyway
