I explain the hype and lies behind the job board adverts on page 6. If you want to believe that the agencies are continually advertising for quality work but no one wants it, carry on believing. Maybe you can convince the tens of thousands that are leaving the industry that they’re wrong.
I am right Jimmy, it’s why they can’t find drivers for the dead end jobs after the drivers have outlived the gullibility.

There’s nothing wrong with being naïve if you don’t understand the changing nature of work in the transport industry, but let’s explain it.
The jobs you see advertised on job boards are nearly 100% agencies. Its window shopping with ‘wonderful opportunities’ and ‘earn £1K a week plus’ with Ltd pay rates stated as normal to boost the fantasies and designed to promise you anything you want. They’re from a host of agencies all competing for the same three or four dead end jobs in the area. It’s why they first ask you what kind of job is it you’re looking for and whatever you wanted, that’s what the job becomes. You get the surprise later on.
For instance, who in their right minds would take that job in the op? No one and why it was advertised as a two drop trunk. Fancy containers? The job doesn’t exist, ‘but we have got …’ Aldi’s? ‘We promise you no handball.’ As people begin to cotton on to the lies they leave and the agencies then complain they can’t get drivers. Next time you walk past a driving agency look through the window, they’re like graveyards. Why wouldn’t anyone with other skills not want to get away from all that and that’s what’s happening. The industry is hemorrhaging drivers and can’t understand why.
The bad news is that it’s now filtering through to the once secure jobs. It’s now not unusual to go through three or four jobs a year as the employer begins to pile on the work and people move to other jobs and after a while find the same thing is happening there. There is no job security in a ‘gig economy’, it’s become a competitive industry based on getting the maximum workload from the driver whilst at the same time introducing H&S to make sure the company doesn’t get a compensation claim for the stress and injuries resulting from it.
If the tens of thousands who now have licences suddenly same back into the industry, do you think the jobs would also increase? No, you’d just have more drivers chasing the same dead on jobs that already no one else will do. It’s not boasting to say we tens of thousands with a licence and other skills have seen what the logistics industry has turned into and don’t want any more of it and above all we’re fortunate to have a choice. When an industry has to rely on foreign workers, recruit ex-prisoners and has to lie about the job to get anyone to do it, you know there’s something seriously wrong.

Hi Wheels. No offence taken. I already know what I’ll probably be going back into, but my point in writing this thread was because I returned back to HGV after an absence and I’m amazed at what it’s become. Perhaps, because the change has been gradual, people generally don’t realize what a mess it’s in now and believe this is the normal state of affairs. It’s a sort of one man’s return to the industry away from the hype and beliefs that have now taken hold and informing the gullible what lies ahead.
TBH if living in the Rugby area you can’t find a job that suits then maybe the problem is with yourself, a few years back I moved to Rugby for a year knew no one there had no contacts yet was employed through agencies from day one until I left a year later. There is every variety of work and shift pattern there I worked flat out for the year but there were plenty doing just 8 or 9 hour shifts and being perfectly happy.
This whole thread just seems to be a whinge fest about how the industry won’t give you what you want yet from experience there are plenty of opportunities in your area to do whatever you choose. Plenty of drivers living in more deprived parts of the UK would love to have the employment opportunities in the Rugby area.

I too was in this area years ago, just up the road at Lutterworth. No problems then. Come back and give it another go now.

Better you state your own predictions than dismiss these, because I saw the results in the canteens across Britain as drivers were laid off and had tears in their eyes as their mortgages fell apart the last time it happened in 2008 … I remember being laughed at around 2006 for not having a mortgage because everyone’s house prices were soaring and the good times would never end.
We’re continually told that the economy is booming. Well, that might be true for the corporations, bankers and politicians, but when you look around you how many people do you see that aren’t struggling every day to make ends meet? Where’s the booming economy prosperity on the streets? We’re in a gig economy; low pay, long hours and contract labour based on availability and that in modern terms is unsustainable.
Go and have a look in your local high street. Look at the near empty shops and it’s no different in the US, EU or even ASEAN in the East. It’s not just Britain, the gig economy is everywhere. Where’s is this booming economy, because it isn’t being fuelled from your pocket.
The Eastern European economies are in a mess and the previously strong French and German ones are stagnating. The next time you pick up a load think about what it is, because in all likelihood it’s for domestic consumption, not export. The problem with that is if there’s even a tiny blip in the economy and people stop spending, this gig economy will go ■■■■ up overnight and the naff jobs it’s based on with it. The agencies will collapse, jobs will become scarce and your jobs, the ones you think will never end, will. They did in 2008 and it will happen again.
If (or rather when) there is the predicted economic collapse it won’t be a pretty sight, but that wake-up call is needed, because at the moment we’re heading back to the labour market of a century ago. Look at the stress around you, the road rage, drivers near fighting each other and competing for the available work … How long can this sort of employment continue before it all falls apart?

Grandpa, Have you tried UPS SCS at Coventry/Birch Coppice or maybe UPS SP at Tamworth for their feeder division? Personally I’d try for feeder, better pay and easier work.

We are living in the past the world is round everything comes in cycles just look at United
We have our head in the sand but what we are doing is digging it deeper and deeper and deeper change can be good most of the time
It’s not your game if you can’t adjust but you might be a old 60 but feeling 70 open mind is good why would you want to drive a truck

Done a lot of with from UPS Tamworth and that feeder job is really good, they even do international trunks to Paris & Koln amongst others

When I enter a place, whether it’s the UK or elsewhere, I usually do a bit of research first. This time I didn’t and it’s an error on my part. I used to live in Lutterworth many years ago, heard there was huge shortage of drivers and dived straight back in. Big mistake on my part, but might it be different elsewhere? I read of one driver that travels two hours to and from work, which tells me there’s nothing around that area worth doing either. People PM and tell me it’s the same where they are and gradually it builds up a picture.
Then there are what I call the ‘space cadets.’ These are the people who believe anything and are an agency dream driver, not that they would do what the now typical job entails as in the op, but wonder why everybody else doesn’t. They number less than a handful, get there information from the Internet and can’t understand why the tens of thousands who have abandoned driving don’t agree. It’s also why the EU regulations were implemented to stop them killing themselves because there was no one there to tell them when to stop. The automated sheep of the driving industry much loved by transport managers and gradually to replace the Poles and Romanians who are also probably glad to get away from it.
Having said that, most are aware of what driving has become and are struggling to stay in their job, keep their heads down and hope their job doesn’t end up the way the others are going. I’m limited to the Rugby area, so although I thank people for advice, the initial op was my way of bringing attention to the rubbish now being offered and the way the job has changed over the years for the worse and in a recent post, I explain why I believe it will get a lot worse before it gets better.
I don’t as a rule do one liners, is that what’s winding the few of you up? There’s a saying isn’t there; when you attack the poster it means you’ve already lost the argument and have nothing else to say.
