Importing a trailer (avoiding a stolen one)

Not sure if this is the right part of trucknet but here goes. Yesterday whilst delivering some machinery in Northern france i came across a really nice Faymonville 3 axle low loader with a couple of features which I really wanted for some time. Speaking with the owner he said he recently took over the business and it came as stock. He couldn’t provide me with any form of documents but is a small bona-fide dealer and VAT registered.

The trailer has the normal chassis plate but that it is and is carryng a belgium reg plate. My biggest worry spending £10k on something stolen. I have purchased trucks from a Dutch dealer before but this is different to my knowlwedge there isn’t a form of reg plates for trailers in France or Belgium and actually would I get any other docs anyway ■■ Please help…

Not really any different to buying a trailer off someone in this country really. Generally all I’ve ever got is a vat invoice, mot ticket and a file of maintenance sheets if you’re lucky.

Get chassis number and contact Faymon. They may be able to tell you it’s history ?

that’s what I would do, even if it’s second hand the first owner might be able to put you in touch withe the second.

Maybe try the police? They may have records of stolen trailers?

The Belgian registration plate will have papers for it too and any APK (Dutch MOT equivalent) should be available. You should be able to trace it back to its previous owner or dealer

I think trailers in France and Belgium are registered. Belgian ones have a plate starting with U , IIRC

From what I remember the only places that dont have seperate registrations for trailers are UK, Ireland and Holland.

Belgium use U or Q, and Holland do have a registration system. A heavy trailer will begin with O (Oplegger)

Thanks for all your advice - I am going to the purchase the trailer - lucky it’s only 100k from Calais and i have got 1500 euro off I emailed Faymonville who tell me it is a 2007 year but that is it - so i am hoping it doesn’t cost too much to put back on the road  roll on tomorrow when i go to fetch it
