Images of hauling to and from ports?

Great pictures Dennis. Tilbury has changed a bit since your Atkis were on. I dont think H&S would let you drive that close the the quay side. Theres alot of ex-Gurkha’s on security down there. They seam to be a good bunch of lads but I wouldnt like to argue with them.
Not a brilliant shot but this was taken on Avonmouth docks about 20 years ago. My dad was driving the FL10.

And my old DAF with 28 ton of pulp at Montrose loaded for Northern Tissue, Lancaster. My first proper sheeting job on my own. Id have gotten away with just main sheeting it but I thought Id be a clever ■■■■ and fly sheet it! The lad who tipped it moaned like hell that he had to take the fly sheet off as well. I then complained when he didnt roll the sheets up good enough!

Mr P. Im sure you would enjoy that crack at the drivers do, There will be some old faces there to say the least, Last time there was some of your old faces that Im sure you will know, Im going allong with Crowbar & his pal Alan, But apart from that there is lots of the old school drivers who still enjoy the crack, Im hoping to get some more of my pals to join in the reverlations of the the years gone by that Im sure we all enjoyed, when Haulage was Called free enterprise, Not like it is to-day, Red tape & more & more red bloody tape, I was born with haulage in my blood, My Grandad was the Late Isaac Smiles Brother who was the the founder of the Smiles for Miles Company, My Late Grandma Smiles was Sister to Thos Boiston who was the founder of T.Boiston & Sons Fisher Lane Garage Seaton Burn, Who now have ceased trading, Regards Lary

Bales of scrap metal being loaded into a ship at South Quay Gt.Yarmouth in the early '60s. Plenty of activity in those days, it’s used as a car park now. I think the closest lorries could be “Kew” Dodges, it is open to debate of course. Cheers Haddy.

South Quay Gt. Yarmouth again and its 1952. Local haulier W.Utting loading timber off a ship. Cheers Haddy.

Same quay again, this time it’s 1957. Plenty of activity both sides of the river. Weren’t those little Fords ugly! Cheers Haddy.

Excellent images, all! Many thanks!

Loading drill casing (pipes) on to an offshore support ship around 1969. In the early days pipes of this diameter were loaded two at a time and it took ages to load a ship. Now they are bundled with wire slings and with the cranes of today it doesn’t take long, plus the cargo handlers don’t have to get on the trailer as the slings can be reached from the floor. Cheers Haddy.

Not sure which thread to post these pics on so this one will do. I remember this incident very well. Whilst working the Danish ferry at Gt.Yarmouth’s Ocean Berth in the early '70s the ship moved causing the ramp to drop just as as the tug was crossing it with a trailer. The whole lot went into the river causing chaos but the driver escaped through one of the windows of the tug and was rescued. Talk about a cat having nine lives! Cheers Haddy.
