As soon as I’ve got the spondoolicks. It looks the dogs danglies as far as they go, have a look at it here. It may be especially interesting to Coffeholic, as I know he’s after a new system. I’d appreciate any comments you may have on it .
I’m reasonable computer literate TC, but not that computer literate. I want the thing to work straight from the box with no messing around. Pocket pc’s take too much setting up. That’s why I don’t fancy one. I’m thinking of the GPS KitKat so I don’t have to carry a big bag of maps around with me, and I’ve had a good week in hand and fancy a new toy . Also work out how much it costs you in maps per year .
It is a bit of a fiddle to set up, I give you that! but most places that sell it as a system will install all the softwear so you only need to plug it in! of course you will only need to put it in the supplied cradle for it to grab all your personal details from your PC then you have a personal PC in your top pocket at all times!! conect it to your mobile phone and you can get your email and even have a cheeky peep in here, while on the road!
I bought a GPS receiver some time ago and used it with Autoroute on my laptop, but Autoroute just is’nt detailed enough when travelling through europe.
So,another of our driver’s had Route 66 Proffesional for europe and he copied it for me and it’s much more detailed. And with Route 66 the GPS refreshes every second. It’s still not that detailed for France and Italy so I’m thinking about getting a Pioneer or Kenwood system with all of europe on DVD,which is supposed to be much better.
With a DVD model, you don’t have to change the disc when going from one country to another like you do with CD-Rom systems.
i have one there great but not perfect…like the hour guard you need to learn how to use it to get the best from it…it does do 12/24v…its not being lazy… to find the stuff it takes 2 mins to check the address properly…what it is though an aid to road safety…eys on the road and speed limit not the atlas or a-z

Can I suggest Ebay for one of these… £439 is a bit steep…
Also, you can get a normal PDA and install Tom-Tom onto that, for about the same, or less, then you’ve got a PDA aswell…

Chrisie…
Er, your not my mum in disguise are you Chrisie? You sound just like her (sorry).
Re the PDA thing, like I said I’m not that computer literate, they seem to either be ok, or if you install something else to 'em, go down and the GPS dies for some unknown reason and I’m not the sort to have the patience to muck about with it. I just want the thing to work from the box. Right, now let’s have a shuftie around e-bay .
My mate as one of those and it is spot on, we went to Manchester the other day to a computer shop and it took us straight there no probs, its not quite as useful as a PDA, but if thats all you want it for go for it.
Get a pda/gps bundle from globalpositioningsystems.co.uk which can also store music as an mp3 player, a couple of games for entertainment, calendar, note-making, connecting to the net through your mobile, synchronise with your PC and so on. a MINIMUM memory card size of 256mb is in order, go for 512 if you can. If you’re consistently in one vehicle get a Compact Flash gpd card for the bundle. If you’re in many consider a bluetooth one, cos its not as likely to break in your bag/pocket as 2 seperate items than 2 items slotted together (already broke one that way). ALWAYS buy the in-car charger to accompany a PDA as the GPS is energy hungry and if it runs dead flat, you’ll have to reinstall when you get home. This is the only drawback I’ve found, and may even be PDA specific to the Ipaq 2210h, and not others.
The beauty of a PDA based system is the ability to amend and update the points of interest etc to suit yourself. I for example have every shell garage on the UK shell map listed so I can find the nearest one from my vehicle pick-ups. (I’m yet to add BP though).
There’s bundles of such already done and available online too.
If I was buying today, I’d go for this bundle, plus the in-car charger.
I built my package myself and it cos me about £50 more for a lower spec - and included getting tax-free american imported refurbished PDA to save cash, so just goes to show how good these bundles are in Value for Money.
Do it! you KNOW it makes sense (especially over a 1-dimensional stand-alone!)
i had a ‘spare’ pc knocking about at home and got given a cute 10’’ tft monitor so i got on ebay for a invertor (£25) and gps reciever with infomap europe (£89) and hey presto a fully working gps system in the day and tv / dvd player at night as well as games machine for when i get board when it takes them 4 hours to handball 2500 boxes out of the container.
i have tried auto route and route 66 both seem ok but infomap talks to you and the voice is SOOOO cute, i think im in love with her (even if it is just a computer) ;and for what its worth i recon infomap is far more detailed. only trouble is the side locker is now so full so i got no room for my lunchbox
