1st post and all that, so hi one and all.
I currently work as a crewman on a boat in Plymouth. I am fortunate to work on a 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off roster. On my 2 weeks off, I am intending to attempt to get some driving work. I have my HGV theory booked for next week and can’t wait to gain my Class 2 followed by Class 1 (hopefully). I have always wanted to drive HGVs since I was a boy. So I’m biting the bullet.
Right, obviously I will be initially working through agencies whilst available from main employment, but is it heard of for companies to employ drivers as casual workers (say on my 2 weeks off)? I have a couple of agencies who say I’d be utilised by them, but it would be nice to get in with a company. I’m just wandering if it is heard of■■?
I would love to drive full time, and would leave my current job tomorrow, but I would be taking a large pay cut. On that subject, I am shocked at how low the average HGV driver’s wages are tbh. Very surprising.
Any pointers at which companies down here local to Plymouth which maybe interested in my availability, would be gratefully received.
All the best.
