If you didn't know, there's a shortage of drivers, say FTA:

eagerbeaver:
Here’s another reason to add why things are crap…some of our very own drivers!!

I was chatting to a couple of drivers yesterday at B&M. We got onto the standard drivers chat about crap wages.

Myself and one driver said we were on £10 per hour, the other driver (Helsby Longden) said he was on…£8.33 an hour :frowning:
I asked him why he bothers working for that wage and his reply was " I am retiring next November so it will do me until then ".

So there we have it folks; I AM ALRIGHT JACK. Until drivers start boycotting these w@nk wages and leave this dross to the ever grateful EE’s, things will not get any better. If the flip flops want to work like dogs for £8 an hour, let them.

This might shock you, my take home pay last week for class 1 was £436 after stoppages and that is with about 12 hours+ of overtime.

Why are you working for that rate mate? I am assuming you are not on a dodgy tax code or something?

At the other end of the scale - there are plenty on here who slag off the firms that are paying the BETTER wages - because it’s “Supermarket” or because it’s “Multidrop” or because it’s “London”.

FFS. It’s about time we all woke up as to which side our bread is buttered in the transport industry now! :unamused:

I didn’t come off agency and go back to full time - for a paycut put it that way!

I don’t need an “easy life” so much as “progressive everything”.
It’s never going to be worth sacrificing one for the other. How many keep that crappily paid job because it’s “Easy” or because it “has hours that I’m comfortable with” blah blah blah…?

FTA says the challenge for vehicle operators is far from over with only 530 unemployed drivers claiming benefit in August 2016, meaning there is no pool of qualified drivers on which employers can draw

How have they came up with this number? how would you define a “driver” in this instance. class 1, 2, luton, van, taxi, FLT( i mean they drive them right?). This is utterbullshit on a first degree case

The independent ‘Driver Shortage: issues and trends’ report, prepared for FTA by RepGraph Ltd, calculates the shortfall between the number of registered HGVs and the number of qualified drivers is 34,567

How many of these “registered” HGV’s are currently owned by traders? How many of these “registered” HGVs are actually sat there with work and no driver?

This is attributed to an increased number of employed truck drivers and rising salaries, on average twice the rate of inflation through overtime and bonuses.

Fixed that for you, by overtime they mean getting people run 55+ plus weeks, we are people with families that we want to spend time with, not making a nickle for some prick like william stobart. And if/When they do complain making them scared that they will never get another job.

We all drive trucks, people need trucks being drove, don’t take any ■■■■ from an employer.

FTA Deputy Chief Executive James Hookham said: “The report highlights the industry’s reliance on EU nationals, with more than 30,000 – 10 per cent of the entire driver workforce – currently employed in the UK.

It’s because of there reliance on the EU that our ■■■■ wages dropped to near minimal wages, because they found that out that our minimal wage was better then the country these’s “drivers” came from. Then they had their families come over to ■■■■ our benefit systems, whilst all 35 of them shared a 3 bedroom council house, whilst claiming housing benefit.

We urge the Government to ensure its Brexit negotiations afford special status to logistics and allow for this employment to continue so that the industry is not hit by another driver shortage crisis.

the high cost of licence acquisition are all impacting on the sector.

They be taking the ■■■■■■■ ■■■■, this is all the stuck up ■■■■■ that have let this government ■■■■ on the working man the last 8years, can’t say much myself never voted. But yes it’s your fault!

Might be, got £780 back from the tax man received. The reason I’m still here is experience, all the good firms round here want a minimum of 6 months, the ones who don’t are like the lot I work for now. Either poor pay or poor management or both. I’ve been with this mob on class 2 and now 2 months into class 1. I’m not planning to stick around. I’ve put out a few feelers but most places arent looking so it’s a case of keep looking till something comes up.

I know someone who knows someone else who works with a big firm here that pays well and is easy going. Hoping to try luck with them. I applied to Stobarts but they never got back to me.

What they are basically saying is. “We want a guarantee that our cheap labour force will still be allowed to work after Brexit”.

Nial hit firmly on head…

Desperate for class 2 experience before I have to do a refresher course just in order to get rid of the nerves of going it alone.

Offred work yesterday at £7.50 an hour by agency WOW people actually turn up for that money.

I’ll let people guess my response …While desperate for work I am not desperate to break my back for peanuts

Agreed, and yet another example of subliminal propaganda for a soft still open borders Brexit, must keep that constant supply of ever cheaper workers for the exploitation of.
Ok they’re not soaking up the bullets as such but cannon fodder has always been the poorest working class, we’ve legislated and benefited and extended the education years of our own working classes to extend their often only prospects as virtual cannon fodder, but we’ve become a cheap wage economy for a variety of reasons and that may not be reversible without world changing effects on unsustainable population growth.
Those who profit from cheap labour, and their bought and paid for fiends in the houses of ill repute, arn’t going to welcome the supply drying up.

The big world (and its demograph) changes i suggest will come if the Americans commit national suicide 2 and elect Clinton, everything will change when America and its poodles (us being one) poke the Russian bear beyond acceptable.

We don’t need to ban any nation, religion, colour or anything. This was never that kind of argument.

BUT we have barriers to removing people that are bogus - IF they are foreign, coloured, or whatever.
The sitation at Calais demonstrates that “Even being a criminal doesn’t matter - as long as you’re not here yet”.
The problems start once they ARE here, and no one gives a ■■■■ about that.
How many do you think of those who have “disappeared into the black economy” - actually end up being say, Uber drivers or London Delivery Van drivers on £7.50ph?

Just recorded an interview with the FTA for Trucking TV, online soon . .

… You forgot to mention the traffic warden on his G.L.C. supplied scooter!

Here’s part one of an interview recorded this morning with Sally Gilson, of the FTA (Freight Transport Association) who issued this original report. In this part, she talks about driver numbers, and about the need to improve driver facilities around the UK.

In part 2, she talks about funding driver training, and foreign drivers working in the UK:

I’ve deleted the 2 videos which were here, as I’m told they are an attempt to steal users from this forum to the Trucking TV Youtube channel. I’d just like to formally record that never was my intention.

Didn’t hear anything there about anything other than ongoing support, for the status quo,of an increasing foreign workforce,on the grounds of a supposed shortage.

When the truth is it’s all about maintaining an over supply to keep wages down.In large part to compensate for the punitive road fuel taxation regime and artificial limits on productivety created by unrealistic dimensions and weight limits.

On that note we wouldn’t see class 1 wages of often less than £10 per hour.Or bs ‘experience’ conditions applied to new drivers.Or class 1 drivers being lumbered with substandard class ‘3’ or 7.5 tonne,or even menial type jobs advertised as so called ‘driving’ jobs,‘if’ there was any real ‘shortage’ of ‘drivers’.

Road Haulage doesn’t so much need “assistance” rather than “Just not being sabotaged all the time”.

In my mind, things in London regarding the non-Brit Non-EE driving population - are going to be causing a new set of problems in the very near future.
Current TFL policy and even today’s Uber ruling - are opening a far bigger can of worms for the state.

We’ve already got “dodgy minicab rapists”. What about transporting bombs into the capital, kidnapping high-value citizens for ransoms, and electing non-right representatives at local government level?

…Coming soon, if not here already. :frowning:

… And where to next BWANNA  :open_mouth:

If you pay peanuts you get monkeys - its that simple . Any firm with a high turnover of drivers and lots of damaged and tatty equipment - you want to be asking why .

I know quite a few guys who possess a class 1 - wouldn’t drive a truck - no chance.

Wonder why :unamused:
