ID in EU countries

Just a quick one, does anyone know if you can use a UK driving licence as ID when travelling around EU states? More importantly leaving and re entering the UK, as its only here they ever check.

I have used my driving licence at Eurotunnel to get back into UK before when i left my passport in a different truck but they don’t like it…was told you are supposed to fill out a few forms before they let you back in but got the impression they can’t be bothered with the hassle most of the time…suppose you could get a right jobsworth who would insist on it

My bet would be you would be ok as long as you did not look like an Albanian/Afghan/Iraqi/Iranian/etc…
Then you may be asked further questions

No, you need a passport otherwise I could send my duplicate driving licence to Pakistan and put it on Ebay

i couldnt find my passport 2 weeks ago althou it was in the truck somewhere DFDS excepted my DL as id to ship me out, also have shown DL @ passport control @ calais when again passport i could’nt find it think that time i shipped with P&O.

as at any loading points in europe been asked for my passport by security gards i will only show my licence

Thanks for the replys  , its for my son who wants to go to Czech with me next week, his passport has just expired so sounds like he should be ok if he takes his old passport and license. But i will try and get an answer from Border agency on Monday as no offices seem to be open weekends.

Take his old passport, if it has only just expired. I doubt it will be a problem with the ferries

A few years ago after taking my son with me on a trip I still had his passport in my bag and by mistake gave them that one when booking on the ferry, they didn’t notice despite the fact he is 32 years younger than me. I put it down to a carefully regimented skincare routine. :stuck_out_tongue:

UK passport control noticed when they checked, but they just took the ■■■■ and I got my own passport from my bag.

i had my passport stolen on a bus trip from Sweden to the uk,a long time, before the stricter controls,i panicked on the ferry, walked through a side door to the waiting bus, avoiding the controls,in Germany,i was made to fill out a form, and it was no problem in the uk to get in,i looked honest enough.

I have used my photo driving licence at the ports without issues on several occasions, but i think the official word on it by the FO will be that you should carry it when traveling outside the uk

Well i’m back from Plzen  , i didn’t take my son in the end just in case. I asked the immigration guy at Calais what the score would of been, he said all they would have to do if the passport was only recently expired would be to do some checks. I asked if a driving licence would of done and he said no. Anyway thank’s for all the replys
