This happened to one of our drivers this week in Belgium , The lump of ice came off the top a a euroliner trailer.
I bet Dave filled his shorts. He is still wearing his shorts and flip flops isn’t he?
I saw the agency drivers Merc on the hook of a wrecker today on it’s way back from Germany, he did a better job of destroying it than Dave.
That would give me a heart attack!

As per a recent thread on here today, and typically enough last winter, it’s time there was a) a clear ruling from VOSA or the police; b) some proceedure developed of clearing snow and ice from trailer tops and high vehicles.
The pattern of recent winters seems that it is not just a one off occurrence, as evidenced by the lumps of ice you see around intersections, traffic islands, and the like. How expensive would it be to develop a heating matrix for trailer roofs? In fact, how expensive will it remain for us to do nothing? Even when the ice falls down and is just left, it still provides a hazard to other road users, especially the two wheeled variety. It’s time to start taking this issue seriously, because as drivers it has to be our responsibility to ensure the safety of our vehicle BEFORE embarking on any and every journey? It would also have 'O’licence implications for transport companies too? so they can’t just wring their hands and do bugger all.
The trouble is, that by the time anything gets done the thaw has set in and so it’s just not a ‘current’ issue any more. Which is just why the country is perpetually unprepared for seasonal bad weather…a collective burying of heads in the sand…until next time…

You are probably correct, but a heater matrix would be expensive, and more trouble than it is worth.
The old tilt hauliers, used a couple of boards to prop the roof up when parked up, the tipper men skelled their bodies up a little. Us tanker men carried a yard brush and knocked the thickest off before setting off, otherwise a fat bloke on a tanker catwalk didn’t half bounce!
When I was on tilts I used to go the length of the trailer inside whacking the roof with a tilt board then raise the air on the unit and drop it on the trailer, reverse back toward an open area at a bit of a decent speed then hit the brakes. That got rid of a lot of it while also being quite good fun. That doesn’t really work with box trailers though.
what happens in the cold countries like sweden/finland/norway etc ?
Most of our trailers are 16’. Just how do you clean the roof?
I took two trailers out yesterday that hadn’t been used for a few days. M1 J28 down to J14; there was still crap dropping of the roof at regular intervals even after 160Kms
All I could really do was delay coming back in after overtaking and when I was running in lane 1, keep close to the rumble strip to try and stop bits going into lane 2.

Its not as much of a problem as once winter starts you arent going to get the thawing and refreezing that we get here.
I don’t see why trailer roofs cant be made with a slight ridge, this will at least stop the ice from forming or the snow from settling in large quantities
you are dreaming arent you? we cant even prevent our washers from freezing up so dont jump the gun by demanding trailer roofs that dont freeze
I’m sorry I have to ask…
Wouldnt the ice through screen as shown mean he was quite close to truck in front…in such bad weather…WHY■■?
Or did it come from truck coming other way…in which case…bad luck matey and hope all ok.

Silly… It came from inside the truck he obviously upset the trolly dolly when he asked for Ice & a Slice!
Moral of the story is don’t drink ‘n’ drive
