Ice Cream Vans

Anyone ever run an Ice Cream van?

A mate might be interested in ploughing his redundancy money into starting one up for this summer.

Is there any money in it?

yes there is money in it BUT!!! if theres a ice cream company in that area get read for trouble…A pal of mine bought
a van and was doing really well… untill other vans trapped his van so he could’nt move sometimes these vans
was just left with no driver…now my mates a bit of a hard nut but this was out of his legue… he was forced
to sell up as these italian owned vans would’nt let him work

Hope your mate doesn’t live in Glasgow - Ice Cream vans, Burger vans…the whole industry is owned and run by gangsters. There’s not even a person or company that could open a truck stop in the Greater Glasgow area…unless they’re a gangster. Indeed, there was a guy on these forums a few months ago talking about the new truck stop/eatery he was opening in the ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ area. He was driven out with threats of violence before he even got the place built.

I suspect that there are many parts of the UK with this “problem”. I would advise your mate to invest his redundancy in something else.

Was gonna say, there’s a lot of places where the ice cream van is a sure source of whatever drugs you want.
And as kids, was a welcome source of ■■■■ too.

I did it… In 1961, 62 & 63. Based at Pendine in S Wales I spent the summers on either manorbier or saundersfoot beaches andthe winters trolling round the housing estates in the Valleys and Swansea.

I wasn’t working for myself though but we were paid 12½% of the takings which added up to a tidy sum I can tell you, even though cornets were 4d and 7d with 99s at 10d.

Of course in those days people didn’t have freezers so even on the poor estates, mum would send the kids out with a tanner to buy a 4d cornet and a Woodbine.

I doubt there’s much money in it now unless you get a pitch somewhere good, but they will all be taken. As said above there are a lot of hard cases defending their routes.

From Wikipedia:

“The Glasgow Ice Cream Wars were conflicts in the East End of Glasgow in Scotland in the 1980s between rival ice cream van operators, over lucrative territory. The conflicts involved daily violence and intimidation, and led to the deaths by arson of several members of the family of one ice cream van driver and a consequent court case that lasted for 20 years. The conflicts generated widespread public outrage, and earned the Strathclyde Police the nickname the “serious chimes squad” (a pun on Serious Crime Squad) for its perceived failure to address them”

i would advice against a van but if he gets an ice cream trike they can be very good earners so you can aim for the wedding and corporate markets and also shopping malls ect regarding burger vans i had one about 20 years ago and i was doing really good trade but the local takeaways complained to the council and i got closed down because i did not have a council permit but i could not get a permit because they did not exsist i was unfortunatly to young and naive to fight the council but i just accepted what they said if it was now i would instruct a solicitor and fight them like hell because it was a great earner.

I had to post this :grimacing:

Doesn’t Brian Rayner now run ice cream vans?

The problem is that those businesses are used to launder money, so they attract “a certain type”.dont bother with taxi work either.Google Ice Cream Wars .not very nice they make lorry drivers into Angels by comparison.

My mate has been doing it for years in Bradford as were his dad and grandad, he makes a good living, but the asian gangsters have squeezed most other van men out, with violence and threats of violence, so…just be careful.

could nt aggree more i think the ice cream van is closed shop u not last long unless u have family in the businesss

When I was a kid at school (is it really 11 years ago now!?) there used to be an ice cream van on the playground every lunchtime.
He quite literally sold everything you wanted and more, even a few of the teachers used to get their ■■■■ off him as it was cheaper than a corner shop.

Every weekend you’d see his car go on and off the Newhaven-Dieppe ferry he had a flat over in Dieppe and used to stock up on his ■■■■ over there for the weeks sales.

make sure you have a secure place to park it, a local lad spent six years renovating one put in a soft mix machine only to have it stolen out of the van straight away.

ask jammymutt his brother used to run one years ago

Pretty much the same principle as burger vans… unless you buy a cretain route off someone or a pitch, dont bother till he has either. Can watse alot of money on a van but if he treads on someone elses fingers your gonna get ya arse kicked or your van wont be there next week. but if he wants to buy a burger van and lives near colchester I know of one for sale with a pitch

You must buy a clapped out Ford Transit that blows blue smoke; it’s the law

It didnt do Duncan Bannatyne too bad
