I’ve had someone asking me every other day to get him a start at our place.
I wanted to have a week or two off, so I arranged for him to get a foot in the door by doing two Italy’s. If all went well he’d get a full time job.
He lets me down at the last minute.
What is it with some people?
Ha ha ha two Italy’s in a week. Good ol Phil
On a serious note some people don’t want work, I’ve had it happen to me twice now people let me down when I’ve vouched for them, now I either say “no” or tell my employer “I know someone who is looking for some work blah blah blah, but I’m not not saying good or bad about them as I don’t want to look a see you next Tuesday if it all goes Pete Tongue”.
Once bitten twice shy!
Two italys in a week that albanian ilegail immigrant must have baashed you over the head.
I only recommend those who i would employ if the company were mine, friend, family or other.
Not only is your own reputation destroyed if you recommend a monkey, if have one of the last remaining good jobs with a good employer its in your own interests to make sure the calibre of staff is kept high, to keep the company and your own future viable.
Nasty lesson that Phil.
The gaffer asked if there was anyone down my way once who wanted a job. But I told him I didn’t know anyone that was as good as me, so no
But seriously I totally agree about not giving someone an endorsement, put their name forward for an interview yes, that way the cream can rise to the top and if the company ends up with a lemon then it’s not your fault.

Surely there cannot be many of us who “cannot rise” because above them is crowded out by “cream” though.
“Dead man’s shoes” usually involves the one who’s job-blocking your rise in a firm being a bit of an oaf, who just won’t move on, 'cos he knows he’s got no chance out there in the proper wide world.

oaf or not why wud he ‘just’ leave a good job.
I wouldn’t object to doing Euro runs if I was paid by the hour. Could get quite lucrative with all those channel crossing hold-ups, waiting time, and not being able to drive at weekends like that.
If we closed our borders properly, we’d not get some mug from abroad coming over here from there @ E200 a week or less either… More work for us at better rates. It’s a shame that international trucking isn’t unionised in this country eh?
I’m having the week off. He would have had my lorry in week one, then another drivers in week 2. If he was any good he’d have got his own lorry.
2 Italy’s in a week.

Instead of which it’s a day/salary and when you add up the hours it’s a load of bobbins, unless you really don’t mind working half the week for nowt.
And yes, I am aware some folk don’t mind it! I just happen to prefer to get paid for the hours I work, rather than to accept otherwise!
When we were pulling for Eurotrans in the early 90’s, their Italian drivers (and little Jimmy, a Scot employed by them) would regularly do 2 x Hull - Rome a week.

No what he meant was he wanted to have a week off or 2 so one Italy a week is a life of sun sea and sin y sangria de vino tinto y la canta y la baile y la maga y no olvida las puta de caboron asol
Nice to hear from you again limpy
Any chance I can pick your brains on a more pressing matter though

On a serious not uk dvla and the irish equivilant share info and enforce each others driving bans now.
.That would be before the ban though i.e. the court hearing
Did limpyhill not know someone that did it
I like to be paid a net acceptable hourly rate from the moment I walk out my front door to work, to the moment I walk back in it again.
Eg. 30 minute commute each way, 10 hours at work - Being paid £110 for the shift (£11ph in this example) would be an acceptable job. This of course is actually TEN quid an hour NET, when one factors in the commute as being an “extra hour not at home” by my reckoning. Getting extra long breaks can also make up for a commute, without any extra money being invovled as well. Eg. if the above only paid £9ph but you were on POA that you could actually do what you wanted on during, then £9ph for that job wouldn’t be a bad wheeze - would it?
Even on minimum wage, good T&C “perks” like extra long breaks, being paid for more hours than you’ve actually done etc. - it can add up to a tidy sum - being paid for the commute and other “down” time as it were.
Sure, the industry isn’t awash with firms offering ‘lower hourly rates on more hours’ like that - but if we continue to follow the Japanese “just in time” model - that’s led them to over 20 years of wages deflation - we might yet see some firms realise that a "low wage, but excellent T&Cs ‘other’ factors - is the way to go for the future.
More cushy jobs to entice the full timers in - 'cos wages still ain’t going nowhere!
We are paid £670 after tax for the Italian work.
I believe hourly pay is for unskilled workers. And there’s very few jobs that require you to work for 15 hours when doing European work. 12 hours a day stretching it out a bit.
I like to tip on a Tuesday, then sit by the pool until wednesday or thursday. On hourly pay, you would have to do some work to make a living.

is that the pool of ■■■■ commonly found under the trailers in every selfrespecting european services? I don’t like those too much tbh, try to get away from the truck whenever I can.
If I’m out of the country for each whole day, then I’m sure I’d want to be paid for 15 hours of it instead of a flat shift…
Too much time “off duty” not being paid, but having to feed, clean, & entertain yourself - not good.

You must look a ■■■ when it’s ■■■■■■■ down…!
How do you persuade your boss to organise a tip on a Tuesday every week then?
If you’re not at home, then you’re at work. Whether it’s in a nice place or not is irrelevant. I would much rather be paid to sit in a layby than sit by a pool somewhere for no pay.
As I said earlier, I am aware that some folk do like to work for nowt. But, being ‘abroad’ isn’t reason enough for me!

Of course all perfectly legal??
2 trips 3960 miles, 60hrs per week…66mph!!
56 hrs per week…71mph!!
Wonder why the job went ■■■■ up!!!

I am being paid to sit by the pool. I could go and load, Then be told, “We are waiting on one more pallet”. Or sit somewhere nice, Then turn up when i know everything is in.
Our loads tip when we get there. There’s no booking times.
If it was ■■■■■■■ down. Then that’s when i’ll be doing everything possible to get loaded and up the road and take my time off at home.
The bosses are flexible with each drivers way of doing things. But that works both ways. You have to be flexible too. There are the odd times where a customer is desperate for his load, So you’ve got to pull your finger out.
