If I put a guess on a reason it would be standardisation, it might only be one site in their entire network that needs choked up, so they do it everywhere so it becomes second nature and you don’t forget to do it at that one site where you could have a rollaway.

Just a guess or maybe lorries do roll up hill, maybe they all come alive when we are in the little drivers jail. Like you story they all just spurt to life.

That reminds me of an incident back in the 70’s. I was conductor on a bus in Streatham High Road (A23) in London heading north. We stopped at the lights at St Leonards church which was a steep incline and when the lights went to green the car in front rolled back into the bus.

Details were exchanged and an accident report duly completed and submitted.

A couple of days later when we signed on we were told to see the Garage Manager. He asked a couple of questions and then said "are you absolutely certain that you didn’t roll into the car? to which my driver replied “it’s hard enough to drive them up that hill let alone them roll up there on their own”.

Hiya…i was on a camp site with the motorhome…this other chap with is motorhome was stuck.
the grass was wet and the van was front wheel drive…i go across to poke my noise in and try
to help by telling him not rev so much, he said did i want to try, OK no problem, the chap wrenched
on his handbrake as he got out…i said i don’t think it’ll roll away your stuck…anyhow i rocked it
out for him…good laugh him putting the handbrake on
