Yep , my driver qualification card arrived today , add that to my hiab, forklift, adr, site safety, street works , c+e and experience gained over many years I should be worth a fortune to any employer …but there’s people out willing to pay just above minimum wage for a job professionally well done.
Just a thought, why can’t all this information be incorporated onto a single card with a chip that can be read & downloaded , just add it all to your driving licence, digi tacho too, everything you need in one place …?
And let’s be honest is the dcpc really going to help raise the wage? The trainer who took us reckons once its kicked into full swing you could be paying around £300 a module, why? because you have to have it, so by the time you’ve paid to gain & keep all these tickets up to date as the price of them rises who is going to cover these costs? because wages won’t rise , (dont forget your medical either) it will soon be time to get off the road i think.
Supply and demand doesn’t seem to work for pushing up wages does it?
Any bignobs get the “new higher going rate due to shortgage of their skills” but the rest of us are out with the washing…
I hear there is so much hiab work around london & southeast that they’re desperate for more people to get the ticket.
The pay? - £8.50ph FFS!
Why would I want to come off £10-£12ph doing supermarkets for THAT which requires me getting a ticket at cost that I don’t have?
Is ADR going the same way?
It’s been ages since I’ve seen any advertised work at £20+ph rates for the top whack hazardous loads…
These days what little there is seems to be toxic waste to be taken away from NIMBY towns like ‘Royal’ Tunbridge Wells…
I was seriously considering doing ADR for my CPC next year, but I’m having serious doubts if it’s worth the trouble now…

Hi Winseer,
You seem to have answered your own question, cos it’s something of a no-brainer to come off "£10-£12ph ans swop it for a 30% (ish) pay cut.
As for ADR pay rates, it can vary, but your area isn’t really noted as a hotbed of ADR type traffic when compared to the likes of Teeside, Avonmouth or Runcorn/Widnes.
Most of the guys I train on ADR are sent there by their bosses because they need the licence, but there are quite a few guys who pay privately as an investment because they want ADR to broaden their appeal on agency work. From an agency driver’s perspective, investing in an ADR certificate does open a few doors that would otherwise be closed.

Hi Dieseldave,
I was looking to get ADR for broadening my availability for agency work, earning a whole lot more, and of course because getting 35hours of DCPC in might actually demand it, with me being hostile to getting a HIAB and/or MOFETT after all.
I’d move to wherever if I could afford to - the wife wants to get away from the entire area, but with costs of moving over £10k from around here nowdays, coupled with not being willing to downsize (Young family in a 3bedroomed Semi), I’d only consider moving for a serious increment in pay! I looked at Warrington & Aust (Severn) about 5 years back, and was horrified to find that house prices were as expensive there as they are here in Kent! Without being to trouser some serious equity difference, there’s no way I can afford to move now.
If I understand you correctly, there’s an inverted difference in ADR rates around the country that ends up paying MORE as you get further from London? Personally, I can’t understand why London supermarket rates seem to be better than up north, what with food demand and type of food being around the same I would have thought…
Maybe there’s more demand for Mushy Peas?

Sounds like a trainer who works for some organisation and has no idea of business and how it works. No matter what the demand - £300 for a 7 hour course - he’s dreaming.
Work out ADR costs - About £400 for a 3 1/2 day course … just over £100 a day and that’s a fully recognised course giving a 5 year qualification.
First Aid at Work - about £150 for a 3 day course and a qualification that lasts 3 years?
my training qualification expires shortly - about £400 to renew it for a 5 day course with a qualification that lasts 3 years. I can get this down to £250 for a 2 day course and get a better qualification but that’s still only just over £100 a day including exams.
In the grand scheme of things I think a decent DCPC course is worth £50 of anyone’s money and not a lot more. I currently charge £50 and this reduces for block bookings.
By 2014 when some people will be panicking - especially companies left with the employment law hassle of dismissing unqualified drivers (and it won’t be straight forward by any means) I reckon my price might stretch to £60/£70 for a short notice booking - but I expect to pick up more work by staying at my £50 when all around are trying to cash in on the situation and charge £300!!
Geez - if I can get 10 per day at £50 each 5 days a week I’ll be happy

You think it will be a hassle for companies to dismiss drivers without CPC? No licence, no job I would have thought, similar to if your licence was revoked by the TC for being naughty. Didn’t Wincanton win their appeal against the unfair dismissal case brought by the two drivers who let their photocards run out?

What I can’t work out is this: We’re expected to get the 35 hours DCPC every 5 years. Ok, so say its ADR for 2012-2017, then HIAB/MOFETT for 2017-2022, and then for your last 20-30 years of working life… What next? Do some refreshers? Get disqualified, and re-take the course to get your licence back?
I can imagine firms laying people off at minimum cost, because most firms won’t pi$$ on you if you were on fire, BUT are they going to seriously up pay for those few, those happy few that have got all the licence letters in the right places come “D-Day”?
