I have a clas 1 assessment tomorrow

and I’m ■■■■■■■■ myself. I haven’t even gotten my license back from the DVLA :sunglasses: …talk about “ink still not dry” (on my pass certificate :exclamation: )

I’m gonna be alright, they have clss 2 work as well

Think positive, you don’t want to settle for their Class 2 work , so just show them what you can do.
They aint trying to catch you out, they just want to see that you have the ability to drive their trucks.
Just blag an air of confidence, and take your time.

Keep yourself calm, explain to whoever is doing the assessment that your new so they’ll make allowances for that and help you.

On the road just take your time, nice and easy and obey speed limits( our lot are very very strict on this on assessments !)

They’ll ask you to reverse so make sure you use every bit of space available. Get yourself positioned right to begin with and it’s far far easier then to correct where needed going back !

Take shunts rather than try in one - no point getting into a difficult position where a shunt would have sorted it, and don’t forget to get out and look if any doubt whatsoever where your trailer back is!

They’re not expecting perfection but any decent assessor will be able to see if your capable and an even better decent firm will give you a few days training if need be!

Overall enjoy it and use it as experience

Cheers, rob and dcgpx. Honestly the reversing is the only bit that worries me but hopefully I won’t panic/despair. Fate has a sense of irony…I did my first (and so far - only) class 2 assessment with the same company for my first truck driving job after I’d passed my test, now a year later I’m going back there - this time for class 1.

Don’t forget to engage reverse whilst still moving forward, then hammer on your brakes until the gearbox grinds before flooring it backwards.

Extra points for jogging bottoms sagging off your arse cheeks too.

On a serious note take it easy, check everything on a walkaround check first. They might not want it but it shows you’re aware and they’ll say stop if they don’t want it or they’ve seen enough.

No probs…As said just take your time.
If they ask you to reverse between 2 trailers for instance, don’t cut in on a sharp angle and try and correct it…use every inch of space you have and go in on a wide sweep arc, so that you are eventually going in straight line paralell to the two trailers, rather than in on a steep angle…hope that was clear enough for you btw.
Good luck with it.

I came in our yard one day, boss says ‘‘Take that guy outside round the block Rob, see if he can drive’’

I was met with a right fat bast, with a pair of, …yep, jogging bottoms, he clambered up in my truck drivers seat (eventually) and was leaning down to the right, joggers half way down his arse, trying to move my seat back.
As I leaned towards him from passenger seat to show him what to do he ■■■■■■. :open_mouth: …involuntary. :unamused:
I said ‘‘Tell you what mate, that seat adjustment’s knackered go upstairs and see somebody else’’
■■■■ unreal. :unamused:

Remember to do your walk round checks before you set off.

Thanks, bud. I’ll write that down on my notes right under "Remember to: .1) Breathe in .2) Breathe out .3) Repeat 1 and 2 .4) DO WALK ROUND CHECKS! "

Sounds like you’re a new pass with everything is still fresh in your head so should have no probs at all, if you can pass the D.O.T test then you’ll walk an assessment.
Reversing might not be your comfort zone just yet, but take plenty of time (and shunts if nec) and get out and look if not sure, the assessor will know that you’re a newbie and make allowances, any decent company will give you a chance to prove yourself.

Good luck - loads of mirors!

Be sure to let us know how you get on!

   Classic! I laughed aloud for five minutes at that and I was tempted to say, ‘good joke’, but it wasn’t was it. I believe you.

Well, never happened…Agency phoned in the afternoon to confirm the shift, I asked if it’s a full shift or assessment or training or what? They said “full shift + assessment”…?

Anyway, I went there 10p.m. - of course, no one knew anything, eventually they found my name on some list - booked for a class 2 assessment. I said ok, then they found out from some other file that I had passed said assessment 11 months ago so I didn’t have to do it again, only needed to sign some training related paperwork which I did although I got no training, they said “well you’ve done a run for us before so you don’t need any, just sign these”. Sat there for 5.5 hours, there were no spare runs available so they sent me home. I’m not even mad as I’m still getting paid at least 6 hours and I picked up a nasty cold the day before so after the 2nd hour spent there waiting I wasn’t really looking forward to be sent out.

Back in tonight and next week for class 2 work, I’ll remind them about the class 1 once I’ve got my license back from the glorious DVLA. I could use some time getting back into driving as I’ve been out of work for the last 2 weeks and my last 2 shifts I ended up not driving at all :frowning:

Ha ha ha best thing ever, still laughing out loud at this

Well they won’t let me climb in one of their prized artics until I’ve clocked 6 months on my class 1 license. What a waste

What’s the point in that? By the time you get behind the wheel you will have forgotten most of what you learned for your test! Think it might be time to start looking elsewhere
