I am going to do it!

Hi all,

I started down the path of getting my self qualified around 3 years ago. I only did my medical before i had to put it on hold due to a) starting a new Non Driving job b) Child care costs for my young daughter.

However my Child Care cost are now reduced dramatically due having enough in the voucher bank before she starts school this August.

I passed by driving test Pre 1997 in a manual so was hoping for some advice. My current job is fairly well paid and pretty secure for at least another 18 months. My plan was to pass my Class C and see about gaining some experience on weekend work, before maybe going on to Class C+E later down the line.

How realistic is it be able to get some work just at weekends?

Any extra cash would be welcome but is not the prime reason for me doing this. I want to do something else, and i love driving. What i want is the experiance and knowledge. I am probably not going to quit my job without a decent alternative perm job but if the worst comes to the worst and lose my current job i can hopefully get some agency work fairly easily.

I worked in a very busy supermarket depot as Reach truck driver on a good in bay for over 7 years so i do actually know a fair bit about a few things to with the industry.

I live in the Lutterworth area BTW.

If you want any good advice get rid of the bit in your question saying what job you used to do, most drivers don’t like having to wait for you to unload them

I know but you can only unload one pallet at a time.

Driver’s hours regs will mean you will only normally be able to drive one day every other weekend. It’s difficult to know how easy it would be to get work on that basis.

You could consider training in an auto as you will still get a full manual licence. Choose your training provider carefully and you will be able to get driver cpc from your driver training. This will save both time and money.

Hope this helps, Pete

Yeah, but you lot go for a tea break in between unloading each pallet

Thanks for the advice Pete.

I am going to do the Theory ASAP and see how that goes, but Mansfield is not a million miles away so i might be giving you a call really soon.
