I have been doing agency work and this has enabled me to drive large LGV2.
I am totally fed up with all sorts of truck drivers who feel that it is OK to drive 3 - 4 feet from the rear of my vehicle, especially LGV1`s…WTF If I have to stop a 26 tonner in a hurry, the 44 tonner will plough straight through me Now if this was an isolated incident I would put it down to driver ignorance, but it happens every time I use a motorway or other 2 lane trunk road…What I would like to know is why are so called proffessional drivers putting my and their well being to risk
It may be an acceptable practice as it has always been the ‘way’ I am afraid that it is stupid and possibly lethal, it infuriates me that so many have such little regard for themselves and others.
And if one person says it is down to limiters, then I shall be doubly infuriated as then you could be construed as being knowledgable to the fact!
Why oh why do drivers do this■■?
If you feel not well you are on the wrong Job

Dont know about steelwires, seems some drivers just have a nerve… composed of arrogance and stupidity.
Trolling back last night, motorway is fairly quiet and I’m on cruise listening to some good sounds. No rush.
Passing the on ramp I see a truck hammering down the slope so move out as he joins just around the end of my trailer. I’m thinking ‘he’ll drop back as I’m almost past’… nah, he uses his momentum from the slope to push up the inside. Trouble is, momentum gives way and now he is halfway along and we are evenly matched. I can see he’s not happy (flashing lights tend to give it away), so I backed off and let him thru only to receive the finger from some clown crouched over his steering wheel like it will make him go faster.
As we are doing the same speed it must just be a state of mind… he’s obviously psyched up whilst I am enjoying the ride. No excuse for tailgating or underrunning, none at all. The reason you got away with it is not because your a good driver, know the science or your lucky… its because the other person thought more about their safety than you. One day you might pick the wrong situation.

My wife really hates it in the car. There’s nothing more scarier for kids in the back of a car looking at the massive grille of a wagon aproaching the rear of the car and sitting there, its intimidation and bullying.
if this happens on the motorway
easy…
In a car with my little one on the back seat and wife driving going through road works on inside lane doing 50mph speed limit. This""massive grille “”
was so close i could see a stonechip on his headlight.when my wife asked me what? and why? he was doing this what could I say?
Well,appart from
Don`t warry honey.He is a ““professional”” driver…

Be safe everyone
Tell your wife there is an easy safe way to deal with this in the situation you describe -
Very very very gently slow down until 30mph is reached then quickly accelerate - this will make a huge gap - done this myself many times when some idiot is tailgating me with less acceleration power - works every time

Most of the drivers are trying to push you on, by air pressure alone. Your obviously creating a tail back, so you should either pick up speed or get off the road. Let the experienced drivers get on with the job.
You’ve just passed your test, you know nothing.
In the army you pass out after your basic training. During your basic training your told what to do and how to do it. One of the first things your told on joining your unit is to forget all the bull’ you learned at basic training.

What if he is at the limiter limit on a motorway or at the max legal speed limit on an A road
The national speed limit may be 40mph on A/B roads (single carriageway)but as any experienced driver will tell you, the normal running speed is 50mph, unless the road itself dictates otherwise. I’ve been driving for donkeys years and have only had two endorsements in 20 odd years. Both for speeding, one by speed camera, the other by hair dryer. I always run at 50mph on A/B roads. The police never blink an eye.If I’m sitting in a tailback on a A/B road it’s always due to either a newbie or supermarket truck, Tesco’s normally.
Tailgating on motorways is down to limiters. Drivers creep up on the vehicle in front and either attempt to pass at the last minute, in order not to block the middle lane, or drop back only to creep up again. It wouldn’t do any harm if drivers being tailgated on motorways dropped off speed a couple of clicks long enough for the tailgater to pass. It’s creeped up over a period of time and only creates resentment when the faster vehicle can’t get passed unless it sits in the middle lane for ever. Same thing goes for duel carriageways.

So you want all truckers to deliberately break the law and put their licences at risk to accommodate your style of driving - yeah right
There have been many, many discussions on the 40 SC limit on this site and these days the majority want to drive legally to keep what they have got.
Years ago before the introduction and stringent speed enforements came in you might have got away with it but these days you would be taking a great risk.
There is already one thread on this site where the driver is bordering on 12 points mainly for speeding and the majority are calling him names for doing it. SEE HERE
If you want to speed that is your choice but do not ridicule or blast others for doing it right for these modern times - nor should you expect them to accomodate your way of driving by going faster.

I quite agree that the vehicle in front could do more to help the situation in most instances but if it does not then the onus is on the overtaking driver to do the overtake as safely as possible and if that means being out longer in the second lane before and after then so be it - SAFETY before convenience.

I’m talking about real time real issues not what the book says and I care not one jot what the majority think on here. Who is this majority made up of? Novices trainees, pencil pushers and wannabes. If you ever get out on the road again you will notice most truck on A roads are doing 50mph, not 40.
If you drove at 40mph all day on your last agency job, it explains why your last agency job lasted one day.

Are you saying that the minority must be followed by the majority

I am on the road quite a bit albeit not in a truck but I still observe what speed limts trucks are doing and that is the legal limit if safe to do so. - that seems to be the norm these days according to the majority on here - see other threads on the 40 issue in the PROFESSIONAL drivers forum for confirmation

Nothing to do with it - that was due to my back problem

Illegally: Well declared

‘…The police never blink an eye…’
How come your two endorsements then?
george3:

Store transport planners watch delivery times closely & can spot a law-breaker immediately. Meanwhile, why bother identifying anyone for simply doing their bit - against bullies - to keep a job within the systems of safety that society democratically dictates?
Big-guys: Why not take your Barrack-room advocacy to be antisocial on the roads to your MP’s for them to approve …rather than swagger your law-breaking (& knuckle-scraping?) greatness on here trying to impress each other.

If you took as much time reading a post as you do dividing and editing them, you would notice the bit that mentioned speed camera/hair dryer.
You need to re-read your post then ask yourself who sounds like the barrack room lawyer and you also sound like one of the novices I previously mentioned. Long term agency driver no doubt or pencil pusher, box ticker. Works with a tie on because you see it at a sign of professionalism, as if simply wearing a tie, you suddenly become competent.
If you are actualy a driver, it’s about time you noticed the speed trucks run at on main A roads. Not noticing can only mean your the one in front creating the traffic jam.
And don’t talk about MP’s or democracy. We don’t have a democracy, other than a 5yr option on the next dictator and “all” MP’s are useless.
george3:

Were they within the last 5 years

Same question as before - are you advocating that if the one in front is doing the legal speed then that driver should risk their licence for those that want to drive illegally (not necessarily unsafely) behind them
One final question to bring this back onto the original topic -
If you feel that you are being ‘held up’ by the driver who is at the legal speed limit, do you advocate that driving too close (tailgating), because you feel aggrieved, is a reasonable safe response
george3:
‘…And don’t talk about MP’s or democracy. We don’t have a democracy, other than a 5yr option on the next dictator and “all” MP’s are useless…’
I wasn’t ‘…talking…’ - it’s a www forum, numpty.
You voted for the MP’s - you’ve got what you deserve.
You’'re also wrong in millions of ways throughout your rant - so I’m not bothering with you…
Hardly ever see anyone doing 40 myself and I regularly break the law.
If I know the road I might get close knowing theres a good bit to pass coming up but if its not clear I back off.
I find most will give you an opportunity to get past as they are no doubt only doing it themselves because they have been instructed/warned or whatever.
Its no bother doddling up the A9 to do a supermarket but when doing multi-drop and collections your boss isn`t going to ask you to stick to the speed limit.
When I first did a trunk on the motorway after about 50 miles there was about 10 Lorries in a line you know how it gets and I thought they where tailgating as well and it felt a little dodgy but when I overtook myself I realised there was tons of room behind me ( not quite as much as RoG is advocating right enough) so I think the op just isn`t used to it.

I infer from this that you do not ‘expect’ others to break the law for you - can’t fault you

Exactly as it says to do in ‘roadrcaft’

Those convex mirrors can give a false view until you get used to them - what’s that song by Meatloaf… Ah yes… objects in the mirror can appear closer than they are… or something like that
Conor:
OTOH, everytime there’s video footage on the news of busy motorways, HGVs leave bigger gaps than cars in L3.
I like counting the number of lane lines between the vehicles to see what gap they leave in this type of footage - providing that I can accertain the speeds of course
