Humble beginings

Inspired by DAG’s early days photo’s, here’s some of mine, some you may of seen.
Any way from humble beginings, life was a lot simpler then. My first truck as an owner driver, just happened to be the second truck i drove after passing my test just 2 years earlier. 11 litre 380, chipped to 440. Went like a train. Did a bit of everything. Vac tanks for Anglia water, spuds for an ex employer, steel, bulk feed (2X Turriff a week), boxes and anything else besides. Happy days. T41KGV was last seen boarding a ship for Mombassa, 22/12/05. I’ve regretted it ever since.

Can’t remember exactly mate, a pig breeding group, quite a big concern i think. 2x a week for 4 months, loved every moment.

Joshh, i ran the 2 motors side by side for 9 months, then by agreement my driver moved on, i sold the Scania and moved into the Volvo, within 3 months i purchased the Topline. More pix here mate

Its not been easy at times mate. I’ve not made life easy for myself at times. I’d only been driving 2 years when i bought my first one. I’d had only ever driven for own account operators so i knew very little about the real world. (I remember reducing everyone to laughter in Red lodge one night when i announced that i’d had a new experience that day, i’d been thru dartford tunnel!)
Luckily i’ve had some good mates around me, without some of them i would never of made it. It’s got easier as time has gone on and i’ll never forget that i needed help from others around me. It’s been 5 years now, i just hope that we can make it thru these un certain times.

good pics mr vain nice motors keep up the good work

Well thats a hell of a compliment Buck, thank you

The photos of the 2 trucks together was February 2005, the day before the FH took to the road. It’s something great to take a tired looking truck and breath life back into it with a coat of paint and some little touches. The Scanias paintwork was original and was very tired when i bought the truck, hours of polishing paid off. Although my ex employer did ring me one day and ask how come that motor dint look that good when i drove it for him! It really was my pride and joy. I’d love to know where it is and if it’s still tidy. December the 23rd 05 i was taking some tractor units to Tilbury on a low loader for export, i spent 20 mins riding around Tilbury hopin to see it. Just as i arrived home i recieved a call from a chap askin if id had it stolen as he sat right next to it at Tilbury! He said it looked just like i’d just parked it there, still clean and tidy. In fact he said it stood out like a sore thumb! Happy days.

no,seriously well done,i hope your proud so far,i think you should be.i see no shame in looking after your equipment, and trying to make it unique!!
i would rather see,and appreciate someone who does the job properly, and has pride in what they do,as opposed to some minority of “cowboys”,that unfortunatley blight our industry.
i have a daf 85 cf car transporter, from new,but did a stint of double manning/trunking for 9 months on an 07 plate.unfortunatley at the minute it looks more like a “1967” plate.however,(i have no shame in admitting),next year i will be out with the polish, and try to follow your example.
well done!

No one will treat yr equipment like you would. Thats one thing with having yr own, no one else touches it with out yr say so.

The Volvo pulled like a train, but strangely, the Scania would give it a strong run for its money. No more pix just now, sorry.

Not bad motors to start with Rob, 1st time around I started with an F16 Globetrotter, the firm I worked for wanted to sell off the transport & I ended up doing a deal, I then packed it up, but as you know it gets in the blood so after my TRUCK mag exploits I bought an N reg Eurostar for 3 grand & worked my way up again, got sick of being undercut by flatheads so got out again just in time, at that time I had a 143 (my fave) & 4 new Stralis 540s, next time I’m sticking at 1, this time though it’ll be something a bit more exotic, but rivalling you for lights & chrome, though there won’t be a frilly curtain in sight

Keep it up mate & good luck as things get tight
