How? Uprate 7.5 ton to 10 ton tipper?

One of our 7.5 ton tippers can handle easily a couple + more ton than at present legal allowed to carry (we have proved this on private land as well,of course).the springs according to my fitter are already heavy duty .The lorry already has high sides ala ■■■■■!

Can anyone please tell me?

1; What do we have to change on the lorry,is it Springs front and back, wheels and tyres? anything else? brakes??

2; What else with VOSA?

3; Do our ordinary licence drivers need an HGV licence or are they just allowed to carry the legal limit for 7.5 ton payload as before the uprate or indeed are they not allowed to drive it all now??

Look forward to your replies costs and hassle might not be worth it?

If the drivers have pre 97 C1 and you up the trucks to over 7.5 tonnes then they will need a C to drive them
They will not need to do the INITIAL driver cpc - just the ‘normal’ theory tests and the practical road drive.

Do your drivers know that they will have to do THE PERIODIC (ongoing) DRIVER CPC because many C1 (7.5 tonne) have not realised this

As for the rest of your query, I would say that contacting your local VOSA testing station is the way to proceed

Its design weight will dictate its max permissable plated weight(should state it on the plate cert), and if you do plate it for higher weights, the licence catagory for the higher weight will be required for the driver at all times wether fully utilsed or not.
If its current design weight is not what you want, probably a lot cheaper to change the truck for one of the required weight catagory than give your mechanic a load of work.

Seconded. There’s plenty out there and if not, its a doddle to take off a flatbed body and bolt on a tipper one.

might have problems putting 8 stud wheels on a 6 stud hub

We have 2 DAF LFs which have been upgraded to 12t, so it can be done
Not sure what was done to them but they look essentially like 7.5t :open_mouth:

were they uprated from 7.5 to 12 or factory built as 12 t ?

we’ve got an 11 tonne DAF 45 but it never was a 7.5 tonner!

it’s just the dampers that need changing.

Im guessing that it was uprated as there are notices in the cab saying “12t vehicle”

Different vehicles will have different requirements to uprate them,it depends on what individual items are rated at.For example,on a firm I worked for,we had a Mercedes 3.5 tonne rated motor that was uprated to 4.5 tones simply by fitting uprated rear springs, everything else was within the load rating.
I suggest specialist advice is needed from the vehicle manufacturer.
Any uprating will require a retest and replating.
