How to make it pay

been asking about for rates as owner driver info on rates etc how do you make it pay at £1.17per mile all miles and trailer hire of £50 per week am not afraid of hard work and don’t expect to make a million but is this the average for traction work fear my dreams of owner driver well and truly smashed :frowning: 20trs employed always want to go it alone and don’t expect to start with a 730 but don’t think I could make it pay with a 370

i wont work for p/per mile, all my jobs are rated and paid one way, but i,m always loaded both ways, i usually do about 450kms a day for £520, i dont know how anyone can make it pay at those mileage rates you qouted

no its got my stumped at the best was thinkin about a new Renault premium last of old shape advertised at £320 per week maintained tyres and tax but that was at the top end of my plans no repair bills and a warrenty but not at that rate and this is with a large national company :open_mouth:

They are looking for mugs.

Are you a mug?

At 117 a mile you can’t!

What area of the country are you in?

The going rate is around £1.35 a mile now for traction from the uk ports some pay a little bit more some pay a little less
Hope that helps

I get more per mile for a Luton van

Aye, but truck geezers gotta be truck geezers ain’t it? :frowning:

Oh yes you can!!

Night trunk, light loads, 400mile round trip 5 nights a week 10mpg.

Running costs £0.52/mile…£1040/week

Standing cost…£600/week

Total costs…£1640

Income 2000m @ £1.17…£2340

Profit…£700

Unlikely scenario and maybe £700 is not considered worth the effort but is still a profit, and those costs are achievable.

Hmmmm, is there a que?

bazstan009:
Hmmmm, is there a que?

So using that scenario and costings what would be an acceptable turnover?..

I was being flippant
But as for being acceptable, one mans view is a mile off another mans view.

Totally agree with you there but it would be interesting to see what others think would be acceptable for such a job…not that one is ever likely to materialise.

I think it’s a fair point that one OO could run for a lower rate per mile than another if he was pulling lighter loads, running on Belgian diesel etc.

The problem with this sort of scenario is its easy to be a bizzy fool so yr doing 400 mile a night so lets just say u avg 50 mph for every single mile and had no traffic etc that’s 8 hours drivin straight off then let’s say 4 hours other work tipping loading etc plus that ■■■■■■ in the wood pile a 45 min tacho break so lets just say for arguments sake it’s a 12 n half hour nite shift then thro into it Ud be giving up either a sun nite or a fri night to get yr 5 shifts in you’ve only got 700 quid left to play with I’d say that’s no where near enuff to pay yourself a wage out of when taking into acount tax nat ins holidays downtime etc
If I was doing that run I’d want to see at least 650 in my pocket once tax etc has been accounted for

And wages?

coiler:
And wages?

I presume he means £700 is what is left over after operating costs, and to be honest that’s pretty much the figure I work on.

Yeah, I can see it being worth it to earn £700 being an O/D for a lot of blokes who have the horn for running their own trucks, I’ve done it for more than that in the past & also less than that.

Unless you are really mad for being an O/D, you are far better off being employed by a good firm, £18 per hour on hoyer tankers you say?

If I only ever ran one it would be hard to justify to myself what I do for the folding sometimes but I like the hunt for the new work, the thrill of the chase & the fine wine of success which has been in short supply in the recession, it’s on the turn now though. Hope is a powerful narcotic.

I don’t like trying to get new work on the phone as I find this stressful but it’s got to be done & is worth it if it’s primary rate.

I find the job a piece of ■■■■ to be honest & on the whole enjoy it.

My super power would be hindsight.

With some premium day work and double shift it, could make sense.
