How to get into Tanker Driving

Hi there,

I have been driving for around 4 years now with LGV C+E and ADR Packages.

I am thinking about getting into Tanker Driving - I will obviously need to do the Tanks addon to my ADR and the PDP Theory (I understand that the practical would be done by an employer).

I am located in the Sheffield area - are there any main agencies which specialise in Tanker driving or do all standard agencies do this?

Any tips or comments from your experienced people■■?

Constructive comments are welcomed.

Thanks in anticipation

Alan

Personally I would just apply to any tanker companies in your area, if they like you and want you they’ll sort out any additional training you require. You’ve already got ADR so you’re more than half way there already, just knock on a few doors and see what comes about.

^^^^ what he said.

Pop along to a Pertemps branch near you and enquire about any work with BOC at Brinsworth. Holiday time now and agency cover used.

I think theres a course which instructs you to defect the most ridiculous of little things, try your hardest to drop as many loads as possible and generally toss the job off and bother any workshop staff you encounter throughout the day just long enough so you’ve not enough time to do that last load. Once that time has passed you will quite happily drive the vehicle back to the terminal whilst it’s on fire, early finish and what not!
I’m not sure if this is part of the petroleum drivers passport or a separate module mind!

Id stay clear of agencies if I were you, they tend to deal with people who have lots of experience, all their tickets in order etc.

You mentioned PDP so I take it its fuel tankers in particular you’re after, if so you need to be very well connected. That game is very competitive & difficult to get into

If it’s so competitive why are Hoyer advertising on MWSA boards! Nearly all the fleets are only employing agency and BP tend to recruit new to industry through their dedicated agencies. Just go for it with the right Cv and attitude you will hopefully get a chance.
Good luck.

So what does that tell you…■■? Very rare you see a permanent job being advertised at the going/established rate with a good chance of actually being set on!

If they are genuinely recruiting then how come they’ve never responded to any of my many applications? I have everything they require so all that told me was that it was all a gimmick so I left it.

I’ve heard different, been told that one of the agencies that supplies drivers to BP are very selective & everyone who gets in (to the Agy) HAS previous experience & is connected. There are very few drivers that actually work for BP directly:!:

Seen better tho, try and hold out for a £45k PA if you can.

Tbh there isn’t much call for ADR and especially ADR tanker drivers in South Yorkshire, even the agencies will tell you this, likewise there’s likely no additional remuneration (£) paid by the agencies for this type of work. Whereas decades ago there was an additional £1-£2 p/hr paid for ADR work. Specialists firms such as BOC will possibly be the likely route in, but there’s probably more candidates than jobs. This is probably due to everyone taking ADR as part of their DCPC.
iirc there is a few fuel bunkering places dotted round the district but they are small firms, one I can think of is down behind Macro on the parkway estate, sharing the yard with Ambassador Tspt

BP have 150 in house directly employed drivers . And around 80 full time dedicated agency . All the agency drivers are assessed and interviewed by BP staff and it’s a rarity that they take experienced too much baggage . Connected sounds like the Mafia lol but it’s not it’s a,lol about your CV and how you are with the interview.

Best get working on that CV then
