How the hell do I cook anything?

My dinner , pork in gravy ( heated in microwave ) spuds and carrots on gas stove

Yup never. I will add in the interests of balance that in my 50 odd years I have cooked less than five times in my house too.

I like to cook, then I get to eat what I like !
However you old fashioned guys with a wife at home doing the chores are “lucky” according to some or dinosaurs to the rest of the population.

Jammy sod…
And I bet the only think you ever hoover is the cab , and the washing machine belongs to the wife only, And I also bet you do not even know the colour of the iron.

What is this I Ron thing of which you speak? Is it another Apple device?

I don’t cook because I have no interest in it, I pay a pilot to fly me to my holiday destination, I pay a dentist to sort my gnashers, I’m also more than happy to pay someone to prepare and cook my food.

Yeh, and if she’s particularly good one week, I’ll show her my gratitude in the bedroom. :sunglasses:
If she’s lucky that is.

You two are difinitely old school and proud of it, I am modern man by comparison , but being retired now for a few weeks I am getting into chilled mood and am enjoying doing odd things like housework ! (Only in a modest way).
And when the motor home turns up in June it will be like keeping the truck clean and tidy away from home …

Once again this raises the question of what the nightout allowance is for is it (a) to pay for showers (b)upkeep of your bedding etc (c)pay for meals),or (d) subsidies your wages.
The last time I looked HMRC tax free allowance was £26.20 per night with random checks made to ensure it was being used for the purpose.Five nights out makes that £131.00 pretty sure I could manage to survive on that without the need for incab cooking facilities.
Ask the other drivers how they get around the issue.

Of course you can get by on night out money even when it’s only 4 nights! Two things your post raises for me, I didn’t mind eating out some of the time but after a couple of days I’d had enough and wanted home cooked. It tasted better and I had complete control over the contents. The other point is I think we all know that night out money is also intended as bait by many firms to attract drivers and boost the financial appeal of the job and without this many firms might struggle to find trampers.

Have to completely agree with you here and was the whole point of the OP. I like to know what’s in my meals and am more than happy (even if maybe not completely capable) of cooking my own. I’m happy to eat out a few nights (and probably will). The night out money is in my opinion more of an incentive for drivers and recompense for the night away than it is to pay for expenses. Of course that is how it is justified with HMRC and rightly so as those expenses can and I’m sure do occur for many drivers. I’d rather have my cake and eat it if possible. That is, take the extra money and eat what I want to eat, if I’m capable and willing to do that why wouldn’t I.

Thanks again for all the responses and banter, I’ve got a few ideas I wouldn’t have had otherwise. In the short term I’ve got myself a 12v mini oven that works without an inverter as it was cheap and by all accounts actually quite good. Will definitely be upgrading in the future and maybe even give the burner a try especially as the weather (supposedly) improves.

Just make sure that the 12v socket is man enough to carry the oven mate.
I had a Scania once, where the kettle used to melt the plug in the socket.

I think it’s rated at 13 amp draw and most standard sockets are 15amp (I think) but I’ll definitely double check before plugging it in. Thanks for the heads up, I’m sure the boss wouldn’t appreciate me melting parts of a new truck.

You could get a 12v kettle - live off noodles !

Or you can get 12v electric frying pans ! They take about 10 minutes or so to cook something.

Or you can get a 12v portable stove. You can make a stew and have it heating through while you drive ! RoadPro do one and this guy gives you recipes for it ! 12vcooking.com/
He even managed to cook a chicken in it - it took him 2 1/2 hours though.

If I tramp…i tramp on my terms.

That’s the 12v oven I’ve got ordered (Road Pro) and that’s the fella I’ve seen on YouTube that convinced me to get it. Genuinely looks very good. Now just to convince the wife to make of all (or at least some of) my meals on a weekend :stuck_out_tongue:

Would like a 12v kettle too but they look very hit and miss from reviews I’ve seen, yet to find a good one. Any recommendations?

With inverters remember to have the right one for the job ie 1500watt kettle then 3K watt inverter. The microwave can be used to cook no end of food, if youre not too sure a microwave cookbook is invaluble. Portable gas stove is my favourite but i only ever use it outside. Cooking for yourself is far healthier, using fresh ingredients you can avoid the salt/fat/ MSG and staph content present many commercial kitchens dish up…

stay away from anything that you plug into a socket on the dash - it just wont be up to the job - these are most likely to be the cause of melted wiring and fires .
If your wanting to use a microwave and have enough power your talking about a 2000 or a 3000 watt inverter -I bought one of these -

one of the leads mentioned further up the page -

and connect it to your tail lift lead and away you go .
Easily disconnected and hidden / taken home . If your not sure how to hook it up ask someone who knows how and get it done properly.

Forget all that hard wiring, inverters etc, getting the fitter to wire it in, asking for permission to cook in the cab!!

Gas is best!!!

amazon.co.uk/Camp-Stoves/b? … 3076438031

the “Bistro Stove” is the nuts !!!

i have a volvo fh 500 2018 has 700 watt inverter built in with 600 watt microwave.i took the factory fit crap out put 3000 watt inverter in and 900 watt Aldi special combi micro in 50 quid does everything i want but only use when cant get to a routier coz after spending all day in truck would rather go socialize in bar/restaurant than be a cab rat
