How the "green death" came to be

youtu.be/4_p5LbXY02I as much as I hate Eddie Stobart and everything it stands for, I came across this on you tube and as much as I hate to admit it. it was actually quite interesting. not like that crap trucks and trailer nonsense it features eddie himself telling it like it was

Yeah after a lot of slagging off on here I thought I’d look on YouTube at stobart and came across this video. Quite interesting really.

Any guesses on when that was made please?

got to have been mid to late 90s or early 00s cos the channel tunnel opened mid 90s

I’ve just looked on Amazon and it seems the video was released in VHS format in 1995.

That would seem about right because it is basically the story about the first 25 years of Eddie Stobarts Ltd after Edward Stobart Jnr started the general haulage side of the company in 1970.

Early 90s, like 92-4 ish. That’s when I followed CUFC (yes, I know). Many a match, I chanted ‘Eddie Stobart’s Deckchair Army’ or was it ‘Michael Knighton’s’ ? I forget now.

…also, it occurs to me that this film is quite inspirational, and would attract me and other quality drivers, if only they showed that they valued their workforce by paying a decent wage.
You can force people to sit through as much corporate BS sessions as you like ‘what is ESL, its you and me’, and you can run nice-looking (ifpoorly-specced) units, but if at the end of the week, you then slap people in the face with a crappy pay packet, they then know how much you truly value them.
I dont know what it’s like for driving jobs in ■■■■■■■ (Burridges, both Armstrongs?), but here in West Yorks, ten minutes on indeed or glass door, total jobs, etc and I can find several full time jobs with small to medium sized companies paying more, with nicer units, and no big room full of office Johnnies, who’ve never driven a HGV, talking to you like ■■■■, even though you’re on 30-40% more pay than them…

That even applies to Hull, one of the last bastions of crappy pay. Had a quick shuftie over at indeed.co.uk and was quite suprised. Seems that even in Hull they’ve finally worked out that you’re not going to get bums in seats for £8/hr anymore.

Running on P Reg plates so will be 96.

Not a bridge to be seen. Fair play if I’d started driving 20 or so years earlier I’d probably have wanted to work there. These days it’s a different matter entirely.

Bet if drivers take A roads because motorway driving is boring these days it’s about a nanosecond before they’ve got a planner on the blower.

^^^^ I do that now and then but as you’re pointing out these big firms micro manage every single little thing so taking a different route just to relieve the boredom definitely would be frowned upon.
One thing I picked up on is I joined Taylors of Martley in 1996 and one of the main contracts I remember working on was carnaud metlebox (spelling) or CMB as abrieviated. I don’t remember mixing it with stobart wagons, in fact we had wagons based permanently in the Worcester factory! My memory of that time is a little hazy and being a newbie at the haulage game I didn’t really understand the business side of it. So I am wondering now if Taylors were contracting work from stobarts or whether they had take the contract over fully, the latter seems to be more likely to my mind…?
