Chap i know asked me today how much i thought itd be to make or modify a truck to be fully submersible? i said thats crazy, why? he said because nobody makes one thats why. He reckons IF there was such a thing somebody would buy it . I believe there might be a market but how much to convert was what he asked so what price dyou reck?

I feel there may be a clue here.

What market do you think would use them?
youtube.com/watch?v=PLGIfVu_PQs 0.59-1.04 About as close as it gets.
There are plenty of examples of tanks having been made submersible in which case the question isn’t how they did it but how they found anyone brave enough to man them underwater. While the better question would be how to put driven wheels/tracks on a submarine.
To be TRULY submersible, no snorkel, it would need to be electric wouldn’t it? No easy solution for air to burn or exhaust outlet.
Converting an existing truck? Possible if you throw lots of money at it, but why would you? Sea-bed crawlers already exist.

My first two questions would be:
- What type of truck (rigid, artic, pickup)
- How deep do you want to go?
Then I assume this would need to drive on land too?
Presumably the cargo isn’t sealed so vessel would need to be watertight?
Where’s it delivering to? Underwater location or RDC?
How will the driver see through murky silt laden water? and how do we prevent a wheeled vehicle being swallowed up in unseen quicksand?
it might not be feasable but how much dyou think would it cost to convert say an artic and trailer ? 500k ? more?

Tell you what. Gimme a couple million quid and I’ll give it a go. No guarantees though.
Deal?
.
No refunds given.

Interesting. I’ve often wondered about the feasibility of sending a lorry into space. We all know that rockets carry very little by way of payload so perhaps the ideal solution is to rig my MANpollo for deep space! After all I can carry 26 standard pallets so surely the demand would be there?
Let me know how you get on with your submersible, perhaps we could share tech over a joint or two?
As for cost; cheaper than you’d first think, the example below was probably less than £9 per hour
the answers to questions like there become clearer when discussing them with your mates after drinking at least 14 pints.
if you can still talk then,no doubt all will be revealed.
they would only be practical if there was a blanket ban for agency drivers to pilot them as by merely getting lost, then winding down the window asking for directions would mean the demise of truck, driver and load.

You read that post, and THAT was your first question??

More than building a narco sub from scratch and they can cost a couple of million dollars to build at South American poverty prices.

Make that just 7 1/2 pints of ESB or Youngs Special and maybe a couple of Glennfiddichs. No modifications required at all I’ll volunteer to drive it along the Thames from Reading to Tilbury just so long as they keep the lock gates open on route and I don’t sober up before reaching the slipway at Reading.

What could possibly go wrong.

The Germans were the first to do it (as you’d expect). It wasn’t their trucks though it was Allied ones on Russian convoys en route through the Norwegian Sea. Designers were Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe.

To be fair the trucks in question weren’t actually designed to actually work at more than 1 mile deep.A bit like the Tirpitz wasn’t much use when it was turned upside down by the RAF.
