hi
I would like to ask those of you in the know if a 60 yard grain trailer is big enough to carry wheat, OSR, and beet up to the max weight or do you need a bigger one like a 65 yard.
Thanks
Nick
Personally I would go for a 65+ yard for general use. You would probably get it on a 60 but at a push and it would probably involve quite a few shunts to level it out. Not sure about beet as never done it. Also a 65+ would be a lot better for say wheatfeed or rapemeal. Hope this helps!
Hi thanks for the reply. i thought that would be the case that 60 yards is too small. Do you know where i could buy a secondhand 65 yard trailer because i have looked everywhere and they dont seem to exist. the ones i have found arent suitible for grain?
Nick
You can get away with a 60 yard trailer but it will be hard work. One spot I used to drive for had an old 57yard fruehauf and although we got 30t of most stuff on it, you often had to shunt about a lot and/or climb on top with a shovel to be able to get your sheet on, especially with OSR, and it was a waste of time with rapemeal as you could only get about 24t in. I would go for something 63+ for general use. Mine is a 65 and is about spot on for most stuff, the only thing I struggle a bit with is rapemeal but I can still usually get 28t on so it’s not too bad.

just a footnote from the LOADERS point of view, A 65+ trailer is easier to load on most farms. It may be an odd statement, but since you cannot see into the trailer from the loading machine you have to either guess how accurate you are tipping into the trailer, or the driver stands on catwalk to guide you. However few truck drivers I have come across do this. I have loaded around say 50 - 60+ loads and I would reckon on about 10% of drivers do guide. The larger the trailer the easier to load ( within reason…).
As already said. 60 will do… Jus!t Barley and OSR can be a struggle. I have done 30t with a 57cu yd er moved on to 61 which was ok 99% of the time then onto 65cu yd which was a doddle. Have used an 80cu yd trailer which is unbelievable… Good for getting weight onto the drive axle in the snow
