How many shunts do you take

The yard I’m in this morning tight entrance round building and past a fence the when strate shrink trailer some more shunts about 15 shunts that’s the easy bit I’ve still got to get out.

as many as it takes to do it safely why us any more or any less

Circumstances will mostly be different bay to bay or day to day so as others have said as many as it takes to be safe! Although when it is right you can get out with a big smile on ya face Yorkie in hand, sadly no one else will really care about your triumph though!

Yesterday none, today same run, probably lots. :open_mouth:

I will get out and look more often than shunt. :exclamation:

If it’s quite tight then usually first go because I’m concentrating more but if it’s a load of empty bays with umpteen lines everywhere then it normally takes a couple because I get in a muddle with all the lines.

I’m sorry but anyone who says they always get onto a bay first attempt has never had to get onto difficult to reach bays.

And maybe just a little full of crap :grimacing:

Spot on it takes as many shunts as it takes, your obviously not challenged in your work and if it’s first time every time I challenge you to get on Bay 5 at Salvesens at pilsworth. Although it is impossible anyway has it’s closed down, many a clever driver would not listen to us when told you have to blindside it on, they then did a lot of damage to the front of there cab when hitting the two foot high concrete wall. You had to blindside is just missing the security lodge on your left when you got on the bay you had about 8 feet in front of you spare and then the wash

10-08:
When no one is about 1 shunt for a tight blindside
When someone is watching - anywhere between 2 and 20 for an empty yard.

+1!

If it’s a tight bay with trucks either side and assorted obstacles to negotiate I’ll do it in one.

If there’s an acre of space either side and a nice straight reverse I’ll find a way to balls it up

That’s me all over. LOL

That sounds very much my style. That said, I really don’t care that much if I do it in one. As long as it gets where it should in a reasonable time and safely, I’m happy!

Someones got a big ego! Who cares what it takes

 same as…

It all depends if i’m ‘thinking abouit it’! I normally phone ahead when heading back, just to see where they want the trailer or what bay i’m needed on so that when I get in the yard, which can be ■■■■■ of a place when busy as it’s not designed for any more than half a dozen artics. I can swing in and mainly get it straight’ish (depending what’s been 'abandoned where) back up and stop about 5 yards from the door, jump out, open the doors and straighten up from there. If i’m on a lower numbered bay down the narrow end of the yard, that needs a blindside…ok if there is no trailer on the ‘higher’ bay number but can turn into a full shift if one hasn’t been moved off and our drag is opposite! In my defence, I work nights and as soon as you start screwing it round, the floodlights are in the mirror and you can’t see squat (not a major problem in the summer when it gets light earlier, as you can see what your gonna hit/gotta miss!)…and no-one from the warehouse will help you for 5 minutes. Oh…and i’ve only ever done 3 or 4 blindsides in 6 years so it’s mainly guess work!! But I will hold my hands up to looking a complete novice a few weeks back when I got back late…yard was heaving but I was on the easiest bay but, seeing all the trucks waiting to tip, the pressure was on! Completely lost the plot and spent about 10 minutes trying to get her on…then to be told that i needed the bay two along…so another 10 minutes was spent poxing around! Yes, there was an audience but most are regular so after having the pish ripped out off me, we did have a chuckle! I just wanted to get in the car and buggar off home! I’ve watched some older lads come in and put an artic where I wouldn’t put a rigid and some couldn’t put a truck where you could moor the Titanic…c’est la vie!

I had to blind side onto the frozen bays at Sainsburys Greenford the other day, put so many shunts in i almost had to get the tyres changed! Pulled out of the yard and was told pick up another frozen load for Greenford!!

About 20

Is that with or without an Eminox stuck in the fuel tank :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:

I thought we’d forgotten about that Phil :grimacing: I laughed when Carl bent his!

Those “always in on the first go” people should try tesco Widnes (the store not the DC), where the lines on the floor don’t line up with the bays… Or the Tesco in Toxteth, where there’s no lines at all on the two bays and you have to be snug against the armco down one side.

That’s 1 of my pet hates, you get it perfectly between the lines, get out of cab and the guy says “a foot to the right mate, the lines are wrong!” :open_mouth: :imp:

Lots sometimes, and rarely fewer than two.

But then I have only been dring artics for 18 months and am still fine tuning my technique. Haven’t found anything impossible to back into eventually. Just take my time and get out and look if need be. But I am getting better and better all the time.

I dont like to brag but i can get it on in 15 goes

Not much experience but… best 4 worse 14 (with help from onlooker  )done 3 blindsides though! probably because i’m too wet behind the ears to have realised there was an easier option
